# terraform-validator

Runs terraform fmt, validate, tflint and checkov over your .tf files, then writes a report with the findings.

## What it does

The skill walks the agent through a 13-step checklist. First `scripts/extract_tf_info_wrapper.sh` pulls providers and modules out of the configuration, then the agent looks up docs for each provider through Context7, falling back to WebSearch when a provider is missing there. Only after reading `references/security_checklist.md` and `references/best_practices.md` does it start scanning.

The order is fixed: `terraform fmt`, `tflint`, `terraform init`, `terraform validate`, then `bash scripts/run_checkov.sh <path>`. The `tflint` step is recommended, the rest are required. Findings get cross-referenced against sections of the security checklist and cited in the report. The `terraform plan` step needs provider credentials, so it will not run without them.

Regression tests ship with the skill: `bash tests/test_regression.sh` checks that the parser exits non-zero on broken input and that the checkov wrapper keeps the scanner's exit code. The extract script creates a cached virtualenv under `~/.cache/terraform-validator/` when system Python lacks `python-hcl2`. Run scripts from `devops-skills-plugin/skills/terraform-validator` or use absolute paths.

## Requirements
- Works with: Terraform

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add akin-ozer/cc-devops-skills --skill terraform-validator -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/terraform-validator/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/terraform-validator/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add akin-ozer/cc-devops-skills --skill terraform-validator -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/terraform-validator/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add akin-ozer/cc-devops-skills --skill terraform-validator -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/terraform-validator/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install akin-ozer/cc-devops-skills terraform-validator
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/terraform-validator/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add akin-ozer/cc-devops-skills --skill terraform-validator -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/akin-ozer/cc-devops-skills --path devops-skills-plugin/skills/terraform-validator
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/terraform-validator/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add akin-ozer/cc-devops-skills --skill terraform-validator -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/akin-ozer/cc-devops-skills/tree/HEAD/devops-skills-plugin/skills/terraform-validator/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- check HCL syntax before a commit
- spot open security groups and loose IAM policies
- normalise formatting across `.tf` files
- trace why `terraform validate` fails on a given line
- see what a plan would change before applying it

## Example prompts
- validate the terraform in ./infra and give me the report
- run checkov against the modules in environments/prod
- format and check every .tf file in the repo

# Terraform Validator

Comprehensive toolkit for validating, linting, and testing Terraform configurations with automated workflows for syntax validation, security scanning, and intelligent documentation lookup.

## ⚠️ Critical Requirements Checklist

**STOP: You MUST complete these steps in order. Do NOT skip any REQUIRED step.**

| Step | Action | Required |
|------|--------|----------|
| 1 | Run `bash scripts/extract_tf_info_wrapper.sh <path>` | ✅ REQUIRED |
| 2 | Context7 lookup for **ALL** providers (explicit AND implicit); **WebSearch fallback if not found** | ✅ REQUIRED |
| 3 | **READ** `references/security_checklist.md` | ✅ REQUIRED |
| 4 | **READ** `references/best_practices.md` | ✅ REQUIRED |
| 5 | Run `terraform fmt` | ✅ REQUIRED |
| 6 | Run `tflint` (or note as skipped if unavailable) | Recommended |
| 7 | Run `terraform init` (if not initialized) | ✅ REQUIRED |
| 8 | Run `terraform validate` | ✅ REQUIRED |
| 9 | Run `bash scripts/run_checkov.sh <path>` | ✅ REQUIRED |
| 10 | Cross-reference findings with `security_checklist.md` sections | ✅ REQUIRED |
| 11 | Generate report citing reference files | ✅ REQUIRED |
| 12 | Run regression tests (`bash tests/test_regression.sh`) | ✅ REQUIRED |
| 13 | Run lightweight CI checks (`bash -n`, `py_compile`, smoke) | ✅ REQUIRED |

> **IMPORTANT:** Steps 3-4 (reading reference files) must be completed BEFORE running security scans. The reference files contain remediation patterns that MUST be cited in your report.

> **Context7 Fallback:** If Context7 does not have a provider (common for: random, null, local, time, tls), use WebSearch: `"terraform-provider-{name} hashicorp documentation"`

## When to Use This Skill

- Working with Terraform files (`.tf`, `.tfvars`, `.tfstate`)
- Validating Terraform configuration syntax and structure
- Linting and formatting HCL code
- Performing dry-run testing with `terraform plan`
- Debugging Terraform errors or misconfigurations
- Understanding custom Terraform providers or modules
- Security validation of Terraform configurations
