# terminal-title

Renames the terminal window after the task at hand, so several Claude sessions stay tellable apart. Handy once you run more than one window.

## What it does

The skill reads the user's first prompt, pulls the high-level task out of it and writes a short window title — up to 40 characters, shaped as “Action: focus”. Then it calls `set_title.sh` quietly, with no confirmation step. The title also changes when you move to a clearly different task, say from frontend work to backend work or from debugging to a new feature. Follow-up questions and small tweaks to the same task leave it alone.

The script sends the OSC 0 escape sequence to the controlling terminal at `/dev/tty`, falling back to stdout when there is none. It also keeps the title in `~/.claude/terminal_title` so shell hooks can restore it after the next prompt. Terminal.app, iTerm2, Alacritty, Kitty and most xterm-compatible emulators work, tmux and screen included. The current folder name, usually the repo, is prepended automatically: you get something like `my-project | Build: Dashboard UI`. A custom prefix comes from the `CLAUDE_TITLE_PREFIX` variable.

There is a deterministic route too: `hooks/set-title-hook.sh` can be wired as a `UserPromptSubmit` hook, taking the title from the first line of every prompt instead of waiting for the skill to fire. The script accepts one argument and exits silently when it gets none.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bluzername/claude-code-terminal-title --skill terminal-title -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/terminal-title/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/terminal-title/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bluzername/claude-code-terminal-title --skill terminal-title -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/terminal-title/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bluzername/claude-code-terminal-title --skill terminal-title -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/terminal-title/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install bluzername/claude-code-terminal-title terminal-title
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/terminal-title/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bluzername/claude-code-terminal-title --skill terminal-title -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/bluzername/claude-code-terminal-title --path skill/terminal-title
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/terminal-title/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bluzername/claude-code-terminal-title --skill terminal-title -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/bluzername/claude-code-terminal-title/tree/HEAD/skill/terminal-title/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- tell apart windows when several Claude sessions are open
- see at a glance what a given terminal is working on
- switch between frontend and backend without losing track
- restore the window title after the shell resets it
- set titles from a hook instead of a skill call

## Example prompts
- Set the terminal title for the current task
- Update the window title — we're on the database migration now
- Run `set_title.sh` with the title “Debug: Auth API Flow”

# Terminal Title

## Overview

Sets a descriptive terminal window title based on the task Claude is working on. Essential for developers running multiple Claude Code instances who need to identify which terminal handles which task.

## When to Use

**Always trigger this skill:**
- At the start of every new Claude Code session (after receiving the first user prompt)
- When switching to a substantially different task (for example from "API Integration" to "Database Migration")

**Trigger on task switches like these:**
- Switching from frontend work to backend work
- Moving from debugging to new feature development
- Changing from one module or component to a completely different one
- Starting work on a different part of the system (for example from auth to payments)

**Do NOT trigger for:**
- Follow-up questions about the same task ("Can you add a comment to that function?")
- Small refinements to current work ("Make it blue instead of red")
- Debugging the same feature you just built
- Clarifications ("What did you mean by X?")
- Iterating on the same component or module
- Mid-task status updates or progress checks

## How It Works

1. **Extract task summary**: identify the high-level task from the user's prompt
2. **Generate title**: create a concise, descriptive title (max 40 characters)
3. **Set title**: run `set_title.sh` with the generated title
4. **No confirmation needed**: this happens silently in the background

## Title Format Guidelines

**Good titles:**
- "API Integration: Auth Flow"
- "Fix: Login Bug"
- "DB Migration: Users Table"
- "Build: Dashboard UI"
- "Refactor: Payment Module"

**Displayed as (the script adds the folder prefix):**
- `my-project | API Integration: Auth Flow`
- `my-project | Fix: Login Bug`

**Bad titles:**
- Too long: "Implementing the new authentication system with OAuth2.0 support"
- Too generic: "Working" or "Coding"
- Too verbose: "The user wants me to help them with..."
```
