## What it does

The skill covers both stacks. For PyTorch it shows how to create a `SummaryWriter` and write scalars, images, histograms and model graphs. For TensorFlow and Keras it uses the `tf.keras.callbacks.TensorBoard` callback with `log_dir` and `histogram_freq`.

Beyond scalars there is the embedding projector, which plots high-dimensional features in 2D or 3D with PCA, t-SNE or UMAP, and `add_hparams` for sweeping learning rates and batch sizes across separate run directories. Profiling and image or text logging during training are covered too.

Install it with `npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill tensorboard -a claude-code`. The skill lists `tensorboard`, `torch` and `tensorflow` as dependencies, so nothing runs until those packages are present. Launch the dashboard with `tensorboard --logdir=runs` and open `http://localhost:6006`. Keep each experiment in its own folder under `runs/` — point `--logdir` at a directory holding mixed runs and the curves overlap, which makes comparison useless.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill tensorboard -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/tensorboard/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/tensorboard/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill tensorboard -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/tensorboard/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill tensorboard -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/tensorboard/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs tensorboard
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/tensorboard/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill tensorboard -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --path 13-mlops/tensorboard
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/tensorboard/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill tensorboard -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

## When to use it
- log loss and accuracy per epoch
- watch weight and gradient distributions during training
- compare several training runs on one chart
- render the model graph to check the architecture
- project embeddings into 2D to spot clusters

## Example prompts
- Add `SummaryWriter` metric logging to my training loop under `runs/experiment_1`
- Show me how to log weight and gradient histograms each epoch
- Build the model graph with `add_graph` and start `tensorboard --logdir=runs`

## When to Use This Skill

Use TensorBoard when you need to:
- **Visualize training metrics** like loss and accuracy over time
- **Debug models** with histograms and distributions
- **Compare experiments** across multiple runs
- **Visualize model graphs** and architecture
- **Project embeddings** to lower dimensions (t-SNE, PCA)
- **Track hyperparameter** experiments
- **Profile performance** and identify bottlenecks
- **Visualize images and text** during training

## Installation

```bash
# Install TensorBoard
pip install tensorboard
# PyTorch integration
pip install torch torchvision tensorboard
# TensorFlow integration (TensorBoard included)
pip install tensorflow
# Launch TensorBoard
tensorboard --logdir=runs
# Access at http://localhost:6006
```

## Quick Start

### PyTorch

```python
from torch.utils.tensorboard import SummaryWriter
# Create writer
writer = SummaryWriter('runs/experiment_1')
# Training loop
for epoch in range(10):
    train_loss = train_epoch()
    val_acc = validate()
    # Log metrics
    writer.add_scalar('Loss/train', train_loss, epoch)
    writer.add_scalar('Accuracy/val', val_acc, epoch)
# Close writer
writer.close()
# Launch: tensorboard --logdir=runs
```

### TensorFlow/Keras

```python
import tensorflow as tf
# Create callback
tensorboard_callback = tf.keras.callbacks.TensorBoard(
    log_dir='logs/fit',
    histogram_freq=1
)
# Train model
model.fit(
    x_train, y_train,
    epochs=10,
    validation_data=(x_val, y_val),
    callbacks=[tensorboard_callback]
)
# Launch: tensorboard --logdir=logs
```

## Core Concepts

### 1. SummaryWriter (PyTorch)

```python
from torch.utils.tensorboard import SummaryWriter
# Default directory: runs/CURRENT_DATETIME
writer = SummaryWriter()
# Custom directory
writer = SummaryWriter('runs/experiment_1')
# Custom comment (appended to default directory)
writer = SummaryWriter(comment='baseline')
# Log data
writer.add_scalar('Loss/train', 0.5, step=0)
writer.add_scalar('Loss/train', 0.3, step=1)
````
