# template-validation

Validates custom dotnet new template configurations before publishing. It spots syntax issues, missing properties, and parameter bugs that cause silent failures.

## What it does

The skill checks custom .NET template definitions using the path to `template.json` or its `.template.config` folder. Execution starts at a strict parse gate. If the JSON syntax is broken, the agent halts, highlights the exact line and column, and provides a minimal fix. Semantic checks never run on malformed files.

Validation covers required keys like `identity`, `name`, and `shortName`. It reviews the `symbols` map for missing datatypes, invalid defaults, and unhandled choice parameters. It also flags prefix collisions between parameter names, such as `Auth` versus `AuthMode`. Short names are compared directly against subcommands in the live `dotnet new --help` output.

This tool handles verification exclusively. It will not generate projects or search existing catalogs, as those workflows belong to separate skills. Because short name conflict detection checks your local SDK directly, validation stays accurate across different .NET versions.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill template-validation -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/template-validation/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/template-validation/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill template-validation -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/template-validation/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill template-validation -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/template-validation/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install dotnet/skills template-validation
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/template-validation/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill template-validation -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/dotnet/skills --path plugins/dotnet-template-engine/skills/template-validation
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/template-validation/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill template-validation -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- validate `template.json` files before NuGet packaging
- fix templates that fail to display in `dotnet new list`
- detect `shortName` collisions with built-in .NET SDK commands
- identify invalid types and missing defaults inside `symbols`

## Example prompts
- Check my .template.config/template.json file for errors before I package it
- Why does my installed custom template not show up in dotnet new list?
- Review the symbols block in template.json to catch missing parameter defaults

# Template Validation

This skill helps validate custom `dotnet new` templates for correctness before publishing. It encodes the validation rules that catch common authoring mistakes — issues that cause templates to silently fail, produce broken projects, or not appear in `dotnet new list`.

## When to Use

- User asks to check or validate a template.json file
- User reports "my template doesn't show up after installing"
- User wants to review a template before packaging and publishing to NuGet
- User encounters unexpected behavior from a custom template

## When Not to Use

- User wants to find or use existing templates — route to `template-discovery`
- User wants to create a project — route to `template-instantiation`
- User wants to create a template from an existing project — route to `template-authoring`

## Inputs

| Input | Required | Description |
|-------|----------|-------------|
| template.json path | Yes | Path to the template.json file or the template directory containing `.template.config/template.json` |

## Validation Rules

When reviewing a template.json, check ALL of the following categories systematically. Report every finding as an error, warning, or suggestion.

> **Parse gate — stop on syntax errors.** Parse JSON before applying any semantic rule. If
> parsing fails, report the parser's line and column, show only the smallest concrete syntax
> correction, and stop. Do not invent required-field, symbol, post-action, or discoverability
> findings from a document that did not parse. Re-parse after the correction before making any
> semantic claim.
>
> The malformed-JSON final response has exactly two parts: the one-line parse verdict and a
> corrected snippet showing the exact edit. Do not append semantic recommendations, optional
> metadata, or a full replacement manifest.
