## What it does

The skill classifies your task first, states which branch applies, and only then names a technology. Tabular work — classification, regression, clustering, anomaly detection — goes to ML.NET. Single-prompt generation and reasoning go to `IChatClient` from Microsoft.Extensions.AI. Multi-step tool calling and agent loops go to Microsoft Agent Framework built on MEAI. Separate branches cover GitHub Copilot extensions, ONNX Runtime inference, local models through OllamaSharp, and vector search with MEVD.

Each branch comes with guardrails the answer has to address. ML.NET: `MLContext` with a fixed seed, `TrainTestSplit` and evaluation on the held-out set, real metrics, and `PredictionEnginePool` rather than a singleton `PredictionEngine`. LLM work: register the client with `AddChatClient`, set `Temperature` and `MaxOutputTokens` in `ChatOptions`, add retry and timeout, pin a dated model, keep keys in user-secrets, environment variables or Key Vault. RAG: semantic chunking, cached embeddings, a minimum similarity score, and source attribution on every answer.

The hard limit is the platform version. Projects on .NET Framework are out of scope — .NET 8 or newer is required. Pure ETL with no ML or AI component is out too, and so is training a deep network from scratch; for that the skill points to Python with PyTorch or TensorFlow and an ONNX export for inference back in .NET. Accord.NET is off the table, it is archived.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill technology-selection -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/technology-selection/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/technology-selection/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill technology-selection -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/technology-selection/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill technology-selection -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/technology-selection/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install dotnet/skills technology-selection
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/technology-selection/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill technology-selection -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/dotnet/skills --path plugins/dotnet-ai/skills/technology-selection
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/technology-selection/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill technology-selection -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/dotnet/skills/tree/HEAD/plugins/dotnet-ai/skills/technology-selection/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- choose between ML.NET and an LLM for a task
- add RAG with vector search to a .NET service
- build an agent loop with tool calling
- run a local model through OllamaSharp
- serve a pre-trained ONNX model in production

## Example prompts
- Pick a stack for classifying support tickets in .NET 8 — plan only, no code
- Add a RAG pipeline with pgvector to our ASP.NET service
- Build an agent with two tools on Microsoft Agent Framework

name: technology-selection
description: "Guides technology selection and implementation of AI and ML features in .NET 8+ applications using ML.NET, Microsoft.Extensions.AI (MEAI), Microsoft Agent Framework (MAF), GitHub Copilot SDK, ONNX Runtime, and OllamaSharp. Covers the full spectrum from classic ML through modern LLM orchestration to local inference. Use when adding classification, regression, clustering, anomaly detection, recommendation, LLM integration (text generation, summarization, reasoning), RAG pipelines with vector search, agentic workflows with tool calling, Copilot extensions, or custom model inference via ONNX Runtime to a .NET project. DO NOT USE FOR projects targeting .NET Framework (requires .NET 8+), the task is pure data engineering or ETL with no ML/AI component, or the project needs a custom deep learning training loop (use Python with PyTorch/TensorFlow, then export to ONNX for .NET inference)."

# .NET AI and Machine Learning

Pick the right technology first, then deliver **only what the task asks for**. If the task asks for
a plan, comparison, or architecture (or says "do not write code"), produce that — do not scaffold,
build, or run code unprompted.

## Step 1: Classify the task (decision tree)

State which branch applies and why, then choose that technology.

| Task type | Technology | Why |
|-----------|-----------|-----|
| Structured/tabular: classification, regression, clustering, anomaly detection, recommendation | **ML.NET** (`Microsoft.ML`) | Deterministic (fixed seed), no cloud dependency, purpose-built |
| NL understanding, generation, summarization, reasoning (single prompt → response, no tools) | **LLM via Microsoft.Extensions.AI** (`IChatClient`) | Language capability, no orchestration needed |
| Agentic: multi-step tool/function calling, agent loops, multi-agent | **Microsoft Agent Framework** (`Microsoft.Agents.AI`) on **Microsoft.Extensions.AI** | Needs orchestration, tool dispatch, iteration control `IChatClient` lacks |
| GitHub Copilot extensions / custom dev-workflow agents | **GitHub Copilot SDK** (`GitHub.Copilot.SDK`) | Integrates with the Copilot agent runtime |
```
