# technical-documentation

A skill that audits and rewrites developer documentation against Google's style guide: READMEs, how-tos, API references, changelogs. Useful when your docs drift in tone and structure.

## What it does

The skill starts from the reader's task, not the product's feature list. It names the audience and what they should be able to do afterwards, then picks the document type: tutorial, how-to, concept, reference, README. Edits then follow severity order — structure first, voice second, word choice last.

Inside are the rules from Google's Developer Documentation Style Guide and Technical Writing course. It checks second person, active voice, present tense, condition-before-instruction order, headings, lists and tables, code samples with placeholders, link text, notices, and accessibility. Rules tagged `[EN]` — spelling, serial comma, contractions, the word list — apply to English only and are skipped for other languages. It never translates a document unless asked.

Scoring runs on ten Quick Diagnostic rows, one point each. A 9–10 means the doc ships as is; 5–6 means restructure the sections first. A separate blocking gate sits on top: wrong or unverifiable facts, a procedure that can't be completed, and information that lives only in an image without alt text stop publication at any score. One thing to know before you install: the skill leans on Google's guide, so a project's own style guide still comes first and Google's applies after it.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add wondelai/skills --skill technical-documentation -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/technical-documentation/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/technical-documentation/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add wondelai/skills --skill technical-documentation -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/technical-documentation/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add wondelai/skills --skill technical-documentation -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/technical-documentation/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install wondelai/skills technical-documentation
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/technical-documentation/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add wondelai/skills --skill technical-documentation -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/wondelai/skills --path technical-documentation
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/technical-documentation/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add wondelai/skills --skill technical-documentation -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/wondelai/skills/tree/HEAD/technical-documentation/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- audit a README before a release
- rewrite a how-to so the steps run in order
- split concept and procedure into linked pages
- enforce one voice and one set of terms across a docs set
- write API reference and docstrings from the code

## Example prompts
- audit our README against Google's style guide and list what fails
- rewrite this procedure: drop the passive voice and put conditions before steps
- write a getting started guide for our new CLI

description: 'Audit, write, and improve developer documentation using Google''s Developer Documentation Style Guide and Technical Writing courses. Use this skill for any documentation work, even when the user names no style guide: "audit our docs", "review this README", "write a README", "getting started guide", "how-to or tutorial", "API reference", "docstrings", "CLI help text", "changelog or release notes", "migration guide", or "our docs are confusing". Also use it when writing docs from code, rewriting a doc for clarity, fixing headings, procedures, or code samples, or enforcing consistent voice and terminology across a docs set — prefer it over editing documentation unaided. Covers reader and doc-type fit, second person and active voice, procedures, headings, lists and tables, code samples and placeholders, link text, notices, the word list, timeless docs, and accessibility. # Technical Documentation

Audit, write, and improve developer documentation the way Google's technical writers do: start from the reader's task, verify every fact against the code, then apply the style guide in severity order — structure before voice, voice before word choice.

## Core Principle

**Write for the reader's task, not the product's feature list.** Google's guide asks for prose that is conversational but not frivolous, precise, and consistent, because a developer reading docs is trying to get something done, not to admire the product. Two framing rules from the guide shape everything below:

- **Guidelines, not rules.** Depart from the guide when doing so improves the content — established domain terminology wins — but stay consistent within the document.
- **Precedence.** A project's own style guide comes first, then Google's guide, then Merriam-Webster (spelling), the Chicago Manual of Style (general style), and the Microsoft Writing Style Guide (technical style).
