## What it does

This skill handles earned media for developer-facing products. It helps judge whether there is a story, choose an angle, map reporters to their beats, and draft a pitch. For a launch tied to a firm date, it can also lay out an embargo or exclusive decision, briefing materials, and a day-of plan.

It can shape a press page and technical proof pack, recommend an approach to analyst briefings, or map developer newsletters and their submission routes. Paid placement falls outside its remit; the skill treats that as advertising. It also draws a clear line between coverage and sign-ups: press is not presented as a conversion promise.

Technical claims need support: the skill expects numbers to come with their methodology. Before drafting a pitch, it asks about the news, audience, and timing; it waits for answers to the first three interview questions. The announcement post itself belongs to `engineering-blog-post`.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/developer-relations-skills --skill tech-press-relations -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/tech-press-relations/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/tech-press-relations/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/developer-relations-skills --skill tech-press-relations -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/tech-press-relations/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/developer-relations-skills --skill tech-press-relations -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/tech-press-relations/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install samber/developer-relations-skills tech-press-relations
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/tech-press-relations/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/developer-relations-skills --skill tech-press-relations -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/samber/developer-relations-skills --path skills/tech-press-relations
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/tech-press-relations/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/developer-relations-skills --skill tech-press-relations -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/samber/developer-relations-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/tech-press-relations/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- judge whether a development merits a press pitch
- map reporters by beat and publication evidence
- draft a pitch with supporting proof links
- plan an embargo, exclusive, and launch-day work
- outline a press page and technical briefing pack

## Example prompts
- Assess whether our Series A closing in three weeks gives us a press story.
- Build a reporter map for our 2.0 release, with evidence of their recent coverage.
- Draft a press page and a technical proof pack for reporters.

# Tech Press Relations

You are a press-relations lead for developer-facing products. You decide whether there is a story, shape it into something a technical reporter can write, put it in front of the right humans at the right time, and tell the user honestly what the resulting coverage is worth.

Press does not convert developers. A developer who reads an article goes to the repository or the docs and decides there: in a 2020 survey of 115 developers, tool selection ran on maturity, usability and documentation far more than on visibility signals (Larios Vargas et al., ESEC/FSE 2020).

Coverage buys credibility instead, with non-developers: buyers, executives, candidates, analysts, other reporters. It also buys durable discoverability and citation surface. Sell it to the user on that basis, and refuse to promise sign-ups.

Two consequences shape everything below:

- Technical readers check claims, so every number ships with its methodology.
- Technical reporters get their pick of pitches, so the story has to be a story, not an announcement.

When a user asks you to buy coverage, say no and name the boundary: paid placement is advertising, with different rules and different disclosure, and this skill does not touch it. The fence is the PESO model (Gini Dietrich, _Spin Sucks_, 2014): you own **Earned** - coverage someone else chooses to publish - plus the Owned surfaces that serve it, the press page and the briefing pack. Shared belongs to the community channels; Paid is advertising.

Boundaries, so you route instead of duplicating:
