## What it does

The skill executes two bundled Python utilities to evaluate codebases. The first tool, `scripts/detect_code_smells.py`, inspects source files for cyclomatic complexity over 10, files exceeding 500 lines, TypeScript `any` usage, leftover console statements, deep nesting, and TODO or FIXME markers. The second tool, `scripts/analyze_dependencies.py`, inspects `package.json` to flag deprecated libraries such as `request` and identify redundant packages handling identical tasks.

It provides documentation scaffolding via `assets/DEBT_REGISTER_TEMPLATE.md` and `assets/ADR_TEMPLATE.md`. These templates help structure debt entries by impact, effort, and priority, while recording architectural decisions during refactoring. The manual review framework guides evaluations across test coverage gaps, architectural coupling, and security flaws.

Your environment requires `python3` installed to run the analysis scripts at all. Because dependency scanning focuses on `package.json`, this automated tooling is strictly aimed at Node.js ecosystems rather than other runtime stacks.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add ailabs-393/ai-labs-claude-skills --skill tech-debt-analyzer -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/tech-debt-analyzer/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/tech-debt-analyzer/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add ailabs-393/ai-labs-claude-skills --skill tech-debt-analyzer -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/tech-debt-analyzer/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add ailabs-393/ai-labs-claude-skills --skill tech-debt-analyzer -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/tech-debt-analyzer/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install ailabs-393/ai-labs-claude-skills tech-debt-analyzer
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/tech-debt-analyzer/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add ailabs-393/ai-labs-claude-skills --skill tech-debt-analyzer -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/ailabs-393/ai-labs-claude-skills --path dist/skills/tech-debt-analyzer
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/tech-debt-analyzer/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add ailabs-393/ai-labs-claude-skills --skill tech-debt-analyzer -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/ailabs-393/ai-labs-claude-skills/tree/HEAD/dist/skills/tech-debt-analyzer/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- detect code smells and high cyclomatic complexity in TypeScript files
- identify deprecated and duplicate packages inside `package.json`
- document maintainability issues using a structured technical debt register
- record refactoring choices with architecture decision record templates
- locate lingering TODO, FIXME, and HACK comment tags across the repository

## Example prompts
- Scan the src directory for code smells and list the most complex files
- Analyze package.json for deprecated dependencies and duplicate HTTP clients
- Create a technical debt register entry for our large user service using the template

# Technical Debt Analyzer

## Overview

Systematically identify, analyze, document, and track technical debt in JavaScript/TypeScript codebases. This skill provides automated analysis tools, comprehensive debt categorization frameworks, and documentation templates to maintain a technical debt register.

## Core Workflow

### 1. Automated Analysis

Run automated scripts to detect technical debt indicators across the codebase.

#### Code Smell Detection

Identify code quality issues using the automated detector:

```bash
python3 scripts/detect_code_smells.py src --output markdown
```

The script analyzes:
- **Large Files:** Files exceeding 500 lines
- **Complex Functions:** High cyclomatic complexity (>10) or long functions (>50 lines)
- **Debt Markers:** TODO, FIXME, HACK, XXX, BUG comments
- **Console Statements:** Debug statements left in code
- **Weak Typing:** Use of `any` type in TypeScript
- **Long Parameters:** Functions with >5 parameters
- **Deep Nesting:** Code nested >4 levels deep
- **Magic Numbers:** Hardcoded numeric values

**Output Example:**
```
# Technical Debt Analysis Report
**Files Analyzed:** 127
**Total Lines:** 15,432
**Total Issues:** 89
### Issues by Severity
- HIGH: 23
- MEDIUM: 41
- LOW: 25
## Large Files (12 issues)
### High Priority
- src/components/Dashboard.tsx (847 lines): File too large
- src/services/DataProcessor.ts (623 lines): File too large
...
```

#### Dependency Analysis

Examine dependencies for debt indicators:

```bash
python3 scripts/analyze_dependencies.py package.json
```

The script identifies:
- **Deprecated Packages:** Known deprecated libraries (request, tslint, etc.)
- **Duplicate Functionality:** Multiple packages serving same purpose
- **Version Issues:** Overly loose or strict version constraints
- **Security Concerns:** Known vulnerable packages (requires audit data)

**Output Example:**
```
# Dependency Analysis Report
**Package:** expense-tracker
