## What it does

The skill gives an agent a fixed set of rules for Amplitude event taxonomy. It can draft and review a tracking plan, check event and property names against your own standard in Data → Settings, and flag duplicates, stale events and missing metadata. It also separates two problems people mix up: cutting event volume is not the same as cutting type counts. Blocking an event lowers volume but leaves the type count alone, and hiding does neither.

Work runs in four stages: detect, clarify, resolve, prevent. The agent pages through the whole taxonomy first and shows findings with evidence, then asks one focused question about business meaning. Any metadata write is proposed before it happens. Event states get their own treatment: Unexpected events cannot have metadata edited until they are added to the tracking plan, and Deleted events must be restored first.

Everything rests on data the agent pulls from Amplitude tools. When a finding cannot be verified, the skill says so instead of guessing. It also warns against sampling, because sampling breaks funnels, journey paths and cohorts. Worth installing if you already have access to an Amplitude workspace and maintain a tracking plan.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add amplitude/mcp-marketplace --skill taxonomy -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/taxonomy/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/taxonomy/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add amplitude/mcp-marketplace --skill taxonomy -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/taxonomy/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add amplitude/mcp-marketplace --skill taxonomy -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/taxonomy/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install amplitude/mcp-marketplace taxonomy
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/taxonomy/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add amplitude/mcp-marketplace --skill taxonomy -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/amplitude/mcp-marketplace --path plugins/amplitude/skills/taxonomy
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/taxonomy/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add amplitude/mcp-marketplace --skill taxonomy -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/amplitude/mcp-marketplace/tree/HEAD/plugins/amplitude/skills/taxonomy/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- check event and property names against an internal standard
- find duplicate and stale events in a tracking plan
- tell apart reducing event volume and reducing type counts
- prepare a safe deprecation path for an event
- add metadata to events missing from the tracking plan

## Example prompts
- Audit our tracking plan against the naming conventions in Data → Settings
- Find events with no recent queries and suggest which ones to deprecate
- Generate event and property names for a new feature using our standards

# Taxonomy Generation & Data Auditing

## When to Use

- User asks to create or review a tracking plan or event taxonomy
- User wants to validate event/property naming conventions
- User asks to audit or review a plan or branch against "our standard", their naming settings, or their AI Context
- User needs to audit data quality (duplicates, stale events, missing metadata)
- User asks about funnel design or event relationships
- Agent is generating event names or property names and needs to follow standards
- User wants to understand or improve their taxonomy governance
- User asks about reducing event volume or type counts
- User asks about deprecation, blocking, deleting, or hiding events
- Any agent needs a "source of truth" for taxonomy best practices before recommending events
- User asks about AI readiness, AI Controls, or improving AI feature accuracy

# Layer 1: Foundational Concepts

## Core Philosophy

Six principles govern all taxonomy work:

1. **Evidence-first. Never fabricate.** Every finding must be grounded in tool-retrieved data. If something cannot be verified, say so explicitly.
2. **Scan aggressively. Propose confidently. Confirm before writing.** Paginate autonomously through the full taxonomy. Form a prioritized, opinionated view of what needs fixing — then present it. Never call a write tool without explicit user confirmation.
3. **Be opinionated, not neutral.** Generic requests ("audit my taxonomy") are an invitation to lead. Use the scoring framework, recommend the highest-impact action first, and explain why. Don't present a menu of equal options.
4. **Surface critical issues proactively.** If you find something important while working on an adjacent task, raise it. Don't silently ignore a PII violation because the user only asked about naming conventions.
