# tao-train-rtdetr

A TAO skill that carries RT-DETR from training through quantization to evaluation and inference. Useful when you need a low-latency 2D detector and would rather not write spec files by hand.

## What it does

The skill wraps the RT-DETR PyT CLI. Action schemas sit in `schemas/<action>.schema.json`, and each action ships a matching template under `references/spec_template_<action>.yaml`. Six actions are exposed: train, distill, quantize, evaluate, export, inference. Your data has to be an object-detection set in coco or coco_raw form, meaning an `images.tar.gz` archive and an `annotations.json` beside it.

A train request defaults to `tao-skill-bank:tao-run-automl` while `automl_policy: on`. Ask for plain training in the request and the policy drops to `off` for that run only. Evaluate, inference and export never leave this skill.

It needs Docker with `nvidia-container-toolkit`; skip either and the TAO container will not come up. Opened outside the TAO skill bank plugin, a session runs `tao-setup` first. TensorRT engines come from `models/rtdetr/deploy`, since the PyT CLI has no `gen_trt_engine`, and `references/tao-deploy-rtdetr.md` is the thing to read before that call.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add NVIDIA/skills --skill tao-train-rtdetr -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/tao-train-rtdetr/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/tao-train-rtdetr/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add NVIDIA/skills --skill tao-train-rtdetr -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/tao-train-rtdetr/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add NVIDIA/skills --skill tao-train-rtdetr -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/tao-train-rtdetr/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install NVIDIA/skills tao-train-rtdetr
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/tao-train-rtdetr/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add NVIDIA/skills --skill tao-train-rtdetr -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/NVIDIA/skills --path skills/tao-train-rtdetr
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/tao-train-rtdetr/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add NVIDIA/skills --skill tao-train-rtdetr -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**

## When to use it
- train RT-DETR on a COCO detection dataset
- shrink a model with distillation and quantization before shipping
- compare `val_mAP50` between AutoML trials
- resume a run from `train.resume_training_checkpoint_path`
- build a TensorRT engine and run inference against it

## Example prompts
- Train RT-DETR on `s3://bucket/data/train` for ten epochs on one GPU.
- Turn off AutoML for this run and resume from the last checkpoint.
- Run evaluate on `s3://bucket/data/eval` and report `test_mAP50`.

# RT-DETR

> **Standalone install?** If this session was not initialized by the TAO skill bank plugin, run the `tao-setup` skill first (host preflight, credentials, cross-skill discovery).

RT-DETR (Real-Time DEtection TRansformer) for 2D object detection. Designed for real-time inference with competitive accuracy. Supports distillation and quantization for deployment optimization.

Set model.pretrained_backbone_path for backbone weights or train.pretrained_model_path for full model.

For TAO Deploy TensorRT actions (`gen_trt_engine`, TensorRT `evaluate`, and TensorRT `inference`), read `references/tao-deploy-rtdetr.md` first. Deploy spec templates live in this skill's `references/` folder with the `spec_template_deploy_*.yaml` prefix.

## Dataclass Schemas

Generated TAO Core schemas are packaged in `schemas/<action>.schema.json`, with `schemas/manifest.json` listing available actions. Each generated schema also emits `references/spec_template_<action>.yaml` from the schema top-level `default` field. AutoML enablement is declared at the model layer in `references/skill_info.yaml` via `automl_enabled`. Runnable AutoML for an action requires `schemas/<action>.schema.json` and `references/spec_template_<action>.yaml` to exist and parse. Use the packaged selected-action schema for `automl_default_parameters`, `automl_disabled_parameters`, defaults, min/max bounds, enums, option weights, math conditions, dependencies, and popular parameters. Do not expect `~/tao-core` at runtime; maintainers regenerate schemas/templates before packaging the skill bank.
