## What it does

The skill runs TAO Re-Identification PyT actions for training, evaluation, inference, and export. Each action reads a YAML spec passed with `-e`; dataset and output paths need to line up with the paths mounted inside the container. Evaluation reports `mAP`, while AutoML training ranks trials by `cmc_rank_1`.

The launch workflow uses Docker, NVIDIA Container Toolkit, and a GPU. It mounts datasets and specs for reading and keeps the results directory writable. If a spec points to pretrained weights, mount that weights directory too. Without Docker and NVIDIA Container Toolkit, this launch method will not work.

For training, the skill checks AutoML settings and can route the run through `tao-run-automl` when the required schema and spec template are packaged. Resume training through `train` with a checkpoint path. Evaluation and inference each require test and query datasets.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add NVIDIA/skills --skill tao-train-reid -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/tao-train-reid/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/tao-train-reid/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add NVIDIA/skills --skill tao-train-reid -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/tao-train-reid/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add NVIDIA/skills --skill tao-train-reid -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/tao-train-reid/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install NVIDIA/skills tao-train-reid
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/tao-train-reid/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add NVIDIA/skills --skill tao-train-reid -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/NVIDIA/skills --path skills/tao-train-reid
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/tao-train-reid/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add NVIDIA/skills --skill tao-train-reid -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**

## When to use it
- train a TAO person re-identification model
- evaluate a model using mAP
- run inference with test and query datasets
- export a trained model
- resume training from a checkpoint

## Example prompts
- Train a ReID model with `train.yaml` and use the output directory configured in the spec.
- Evaluate the model with `evaluate.yaml` using the test and query datasets.
- Run inference with `inference.yaml`, then export the model with `export.yaml`.

# Re-Identification

> **Standalone install?** If this session was not initialized by the TAO skill bank plugin, run the `tao-setup` skill first (host preflight, credentials, cross-skill discovery).

Person re-identification. Learns discriminative embeddings to match the same person across different camera views. Metric learning based.

Set model.pretrained_model_path for pretrained weights.

## Quick Start (docker run)

Docker-native launch — no TAO SDK and no Python on the host. Use the local
Docker/platform skill instead when it gives a stricter environment-specific
command (non-root UID mapping, cache redirects, remote daemons).

```bash
TAO_PYT_IMAGE_DEFAULT=nvcr.io/nvidia/tao/tao-toolkit:7.3.0-pyt  # versions-key: images.tao_toolkit.pyt
TAO_PYT_IMAGE="${TAO_PYT_IMAGE:-$TAO_PYT_IMAGE_DEFAULT}"
RUN_ROOT="${RUN_ROOT:-$PWD}"
DOCKER_COMMON=(
  --rm --gpus all --shm-size=8g
  --shm-size=8g
  --ulimit memlock=-1
  --ulimit stack=67108864
  -v "$RUN_ROOT/data:/data:ro"
  -v "$RUN_ROOT/specs:/specs:ro"
  -v "$RUN_ROOT/results:/results"
)
```

Train:

```bash
docker run "${DOCKER_COMMON[@]}" "$TAO_PYT_IMAGE" \
  re_identification train -e /specs/train.yaml
```

Evaluate:

```bash
docker run "${DOCKER_COMMON[@]}" "$TAO_PYT_IMAGE" \
  re_identification evaluate -e /specs/evaluate.yaml
```

Inference:

```bash
docker run "${DOCKER_COMMON[@]}" "$TAO_PYT_IMAGE" \
  re_identification inference -e /specs/inference.yaml
```

Export:

```bash
docker run "${DOCKER_COMMON[@]}" "$TAO_PYT_IMAGE" \
  re_identification export -e /specs/export.yaml
```

Every action takes its spec with `-e`; `results_dir` is set in the spec or
overridden on the command line. Mount any pretrained-weights directory the spec
references, and keep every in-container path consistent across actions.
