## What it does

The skill covers the whole model cycle: dataset conversion, training, evaluation, inference, export and pruning. It ships action schemas under `schemas/<action>.schema.json`, spec templates under `references/spec_template_<action>.yaml`, and a separate guide for TensorRT deployment in `references/tao-deploy-pointpillars.md`. There is no `retrain` subcommand — you continue from a pruned model through `pointpillars train` with `train.pruned_model_path` set.

Docker and nvidia-container-toolkit have to be in place before anything runs. Raw data must sit extracted in one root folder with `train/lidar`, `train/label`, `val/lidar` and `val/label` inside, or `dataset_convert` fails. The agent has to fill data paths into `spec_overrides` for every action; that step is not optional.

Training goes through AutoML by default, ranked by the per-epoch `loss` that gets minimized. Want a plain run without hyperparameter search? Tell the agent to disable it, otherwise the request lands in `tao-skill-bank:tao-run-automl`. Sessions not started by the TAO skill bank plugin need `tao-setup` first. TensorRT engine generation only exists on the deploy side, the PyTorch CLI does not offer it.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add NVIDIA/skills --skill tao-train-pointpillars -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/tao-train-pointpillars/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/tao-train-pointpillars/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add NVIDIA/skills --skill tao-train-pointpillars -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/tao-train-pointpillars/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add NVIDIA/skills --skill tao-train-pointpillars -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/tao-train-pointpillars/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install NVIDIA/skills tao-train-pointpillars
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/tao-train-pointpillars/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add NVIDIA/skills --skill tao-train-pointpillars -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/NVIDIA/skills --path skills/tao-train-pointpillars
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/tao-train-pointpillars/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add NVIDIA/skills --skill tao-train-pointpillars -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/NVIDIA/skills/tree/HEAD/skills/tao-train-pointpillars/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- train a 3D detector on LiDAR point clouds
- build `data_info` from raw `lidar` and `label` folders via `dataset_convert`
- score a checkpoint on `bev mAP` and `3d mAP`
- prune a model, then retrain it through `train.pruned_model_path`
- generate a TensorRT engine for deployment

## Example prompts
- Train PointPillars on `s3://bucket/data/pointpillars` for 30 epochs on one GPU
- Run `dataset_convert` on the folder holding `train/lidar` and `val/lidar`
- Disable AutoML and train straight from the spec

# PointPillars

> **Standalone install?** If this session was not initialized by the TAO skill bank plugin, run the `tao-setup` skill first (host preflight, credentials, cross-skill discovery).

PointPillars for 3D object detection from LiDAR point clouds. Encodes point clouds into a pseudo-image via pillar-based representation, then applies 2D detection. Used in autonomous driving / robotics.

Typically trained from scratch. Provide train.resume_training_checkpoint_path to resume.

For TAO Deploy TensorRT actions (`gen_trt_engine`, TensorRT `evaluate`, and TensorRT `inference`), read `references/tao-deploy-pointpillars.md` first. Deploy spec templates live in this skill's `references/` folder with the `spec_template_deploy_*.yaml` prefix.

The packaged PyTorch PointPillars CLI supports `dataset_convert`, `train`, `evaluate`, `inference`, `export`, and `prune`. It does not expose a parent-model `gen_trt_engine` action; TensorRT engine generation is deploy-only. It also does not expose a separate `retrain` subcommand. Retraining from a pruned model uses `pointpillars train -e ...` with `train.pruned_model_path` populated.
