## What it does

This skill drives the MAE workflow inside the TAO bank. The underlying PyTorch `mae` CLI takes four actions — `train`, `evaluate`, `inference`, `export` — and the skill wires them up with generated specs. During pretraining the model learns by masking patches; fine-tuning attaches a classification head, with the class count set by `model.num_classes` (1000 by default).

Schemas ship as `schemas/<action>.schema.json`, and each action gets a spec template under `references/spec_template_<action>.yaml`. Training defaults to AutoML: the request is routed to `tao-skill-bank:tao-run-automl`, and saying something like “turn off AutoML” switches that run to `automl_policy: off`. TensorRT engines are built through the deploy workflow instead, so read `references/tao-deploy-mask-auto-encoder.md` before touching `gen_trt_engine`.

Docker and nvidia-container-toolkit are required. When the session did not come from the TAO skill bank plugin, run the `tao-setup` skill first for host preflight and credentials. Data source paths must be supplied for every action; on a local Docker run the `images_*.tar.gz` archives have to be extracted first, because pointing the CLI straight at a tar path can leave the dataloader with zero samples. For fine-tuning, set `train.pretrained_model_path` to the pretrained MAE weights.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add NVIDIA/skills --skill tao-train-mask-auto-encoder -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/tao-train-mask-auto-encoder/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/tao-train-mask-auto-encoder/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add NVIDIA/skills --skill tao-train-mask-auto-encoder -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/tao-train-mask-auto-encoder/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add NVIDIA/skills --skill tao-train-mask-auto-encoder -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/tao-train-mask-auto-encoder/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install NVIDIA/skills tao-train-mask-auto-encoder
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/tao-train-mask-auto-encoder/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add NVIDIA/skills --skill tao-train-mask-auto-encoder -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/NVIDIA/skills --path skills/tao-train-mask-auto-encoder
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/tao-train-mask-auto-encoder/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add NVIDIA/skills --skill tao-train-mask-auto-encoder -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- pretrain an MAE backbone on unlabeled images
- fine-tune with a classification head over your own classes
- run evaluate and inference against a checkpoint
- export a trained MAE model
- tune training hyperparameters with AutoML

## Example prompts
- Pretrain MAE on `images_train.tar.gz` with mask ratio 0.75
- Fine-tune MAE from `train.pretrained_model_path` for 10 classes
- Turn off AutoML and run plain MAE training

# MAE

> **Standalone install?** If this session was not initialized by the TAO skill bank plugin, run the `tao-setup` skill first (host preflight, credentials, cross-skill discovery).

MAE (Masked Autoencoder) for self-supervised pretraining and fine-tuning. Masks random patches and reconstructs them to learn visual representations. Supports pretrain and finetune stages.

Set train.pretrained_model_path for pretrained MAE weights when fine-tuning.

For TAO Deploy TensorRT actions (`gen_trt_engine`), read `references/tao-deploy-mask-auto-encoder.md` first. Deploy spec templates live in this skill's `references/` folder with the `spec_template_deploy_*.yaml` prefix.

The parent PyTorch `mae` CLI supports `train`, `evaluate`, `inference`, and
`export`. Build TensorRT engines through the deploy workflow, not the model skill.

## Dataclass Schemas

Generated TAO Core schemas are packaged in `schemas/<action>.schema.json`, with `schemas/manifest.json` listing available actions. Each generated schema also emits `references/spec_template_<action>.yaml` from the schema top-level `default` field. AutoML enablement is declared at the model layer in `references/skill_info.yaml` via `automl_enabled`. Runnable AutoML for an action requires `schemas/<action>.schema.json` and `references/spec_template_<action>.yaml` to exist and parse. Use the packaged selected-action schema for `automl_default_parameters`, `automl_disabled_parameters`, defaults, min/max bounds, enums, option weights, math conditions, dependencies, and popular parameters. Do not expect `~/tao-core` at runtime; maintainers regenerate schemas/templates before packaging the skill bank.
