## What it does

The skill covers the whole ActionRecognition workflow: `train`, `evaluate`, `inference` and `export`. Each action runs in a container via `docker run`, with `-e` pointing at a YAML spec. No TAO SDK and no Python on the host.

Packaged inside are TAO Core dataclass schemas under `schemas/<action>.schema.json` and spec templates at `references/spec_template_<action>.yaml`. For training with AutoML the skill routes the request to `tao-skill-bank:tao-run-automl`. The `automl_policy` flag controls this and defaults to on.

Docker plus `nvidia-container-toolkit` is required. Datasets must be directories: if you have `train.tar.gz` or `test.tar.gz`, extract them first, because the entrypoints expect folder paths and fail with `NotADirectoryError` when a spec key points at an archive. Keep in-container paths consistent across every action.

## Requirements
- Works with: Docker

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add NVIDIA/skills --skill tao-train-action-recognition -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/tao-train-action-recognition/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/tao-train-action-recognition/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add NVIDIA/skills --skill tao-train-action-recognition -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/tao-train-action-recognition/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add NVIDIA/skills --skill tao-train-action-recognition -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/tao-train-action-recognition/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install NVIDIA/skills tao-train-action-recognition
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/tao-train-action-recognition/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add NVIDIA/skills --skill tao-train-action-recognition -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/NVIDIA/skills --path skills/tao-train-action-recognition
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/tao-train-action-recognition/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add NVIDIA/skills --skill tao-train-action-recognition -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/NVIDIA/skills/tree/HEAD/skills/tao-train-action-recognition/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- train an action recognition model on your own video clips
- measure model quality with `accuracy` and `m_accuracy`
- run inference on a test split and get predictions
- export a trained model for later deployment
- launch training with hyperparameter search through AutoML

## Example prompts
- Train the action recognition model using `/specs/train.yaml`
- Run evaluate on the action dataset extracted to `test/`
- Export the ActionRecognition model to ONNX

# Action Recognition

> **Standalone install?** If this session was not initialized by the TAO skill bank plugin, run the `tao-setup` skill first (host preflight, credentials, cross-skill discovery).

Action recognition from video sequences. Supports RGB, optical flow, and joint (multi-stream) input types for classifying temporal actions in video clips.

Set model.pretrained_model_path for pretrained backbone weights.

## Quick Start (docker run)

Docker-native launch — no TAO SDK and no Python on the host. Use the local
Docker/platform skill instead when it gives a stricter environment-specific
command (non-root UID mapping, cache redirects, remote daemons).

```bash
TAO_PYT_IMAGE_DEFAULT=nvcr.io/nvidia/tao/tao-toolkit:7.3.0-pyt  # versions-key: images.tao_toolkit.pyt
TAO_PYT_IMAGE="${TAO_PYT_IMAGE:-$TAO_PYT_IMAGE_DEFAULT}"
RUN_ROOT="${RUN_ROOT:-$PWD}"
DOCKER_COMMON=(
  --rm --gpus all --shm-size=8g
  --shm-size=8g
  --ulimit memlock=-1
  --ulimit stack=67108864
  -v "$RUN_ROOT/data:/data:ro"
  -v "$RUN_ROOT/specs:/specs:ro"
  -v "$RUN_ROOT/results:/results"
)
```

Train:

```bash
docker run "${DOCKER_COMMON[@]}" "$TAO_PYT_IMAGE" \
  action_recognition train -e /specs/train.yaml
```

Evaluate:

```bash
docker run "${DOCKER_COMMON[@]}" "$TAO_PYT_IMAGE" \
  action_recognition evaluate -e /specs/evaluate.yaml
```

Inference:

```bash
docker run "${DOCKER_COMMON[@]}" "$TAO_PYT_IMAGE" \
  action_recognition inference -e /specs/inference.yaml
```

Export:

```bash
docker run "${DOCKER_COMMON[@]}" "$TAO_PYT_IMAGE" \
  action_recognition export -e /specs/export.yaml
```

Every action takes its spec with `-e`; `results_dir` is set in the spec or
overridden on the command line. Mount any pretrained-weights directory the spec
references, and keep every in-container path consistent across actions.
