## What it does

The skill acts as an enforced gate before running any side-effecting NVIDIA TAO operation, including model training, AutoML, export, or TensorRT engine generation. It verifies the target execution platform—such as Docker, SLURM, Kubernetes, Brev, or virtualenv—confirms the container image, and validates dataset paths from the compute platform's perspective.

Once the nine-step preflight checklist passes, execution follows a four-verb contract: submit, status, logs, and cancel. The helper script `tao_job_record.py` mints an ID and binds the output directory before triggering the platform runner, preventing untracked jobs from starting.

Running this standalone without a full checkout will fail. The skill expects shared helper scripts configured via `TAO_SKILL_BANK_PATH`, which requires running `tao-setup` first.

## Requirements
- Works with: Docker, Kubernetes

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add NVIDIA/skills --skill tao-launch-workflow -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/tao-launch-workflow/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/tao-launch-workflow/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add NVIDIA/skills --skill tao-launch-workflow -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/tao-launch-workflow/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add NVIDIA/skills --skill tao-launch-workflow -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/tao-launch-workflow/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install NVIDIA/skills tao-launch-workflow
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/tao-launch-workflow/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add NVIDIA/skills --skill tao-launch-workflow -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/NVIDIA/skills --path skills/tao-launch-workflow
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/tao-launch-workflow/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add NVIDIA/skills --skill tao-launch-workflow -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/NVIDIA/skills/tree/HEAD/skills/tao-launch-workflow/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- verify platform credentials and compute shape before training starts
- validate dataset mounts and container images from the host
- register job records before dispatching compute tasks
- manage job lifecycle through a unified four-verb contract

## Example prompts
- Train this model on SLURM
- Run AutoML for my checkpoint
- Start a TAO job on Docker

# TAO Workflow Launch Intake

> **Standalone install?** If this session was not initialized by the TAO skill bank plugin, run the `tao-setup` skill first (host preflight, credentials, cross-skill discovery).

Use this skill before launching any TAO workflow or model action.

For direct invocation, run the complete-checkout check in
`references/platform-preflight.md` before Step 0 or any helper. Individual
skill installs lack shared scripts; stop if the check fails. Use its verified
`TAO_SKILL_BANK_PATH` for every helper.

## Step 0 — Execution Mode: Card Packs (check first)

Before running a multi-stage application workflow inside this conversation,
check whether a compiled card pack ships next to the application skill:

```bash
ls "${TAO_SKILL_BANK_PATH}/skills/applications/<skill>/cards/" 2>/dev/null
```

- **Pack exists** → prefer the token-efficient path: the pack's `driver.sh`
  runs the workflow as fresh per-stage sessions (measured 74-91% cheaper than
  in-conversation execution, and the only mode validated on small models).
  Read the pack's `README.md` for required env, complete THIS gate's items
  1-9 for the launch review, then start the pack driver detached instead of
  executing stages in this conversation. Monitor via the driver log and the
  run dir's progress marks.
- **No pack** → execute normally through this gate. If the workflow will be
  run repeatedly, suggest compiling a pack once with a strong model — see
  `skills/core/tao-token-efficient-execution` (authoring prompt + contracts).

The card path replaces only in-conversation stage execution; it never skips
this gate. A pack driver launch is side-effecting work and requires the same
confirmed launch review.

## Quick Start

Run the platform helper, ask for platform and monitoring preferences, then run
the selected platform detail helper before asking for credentials.

## Non-Negotiable Launch Gate

This gate is model-agnostic. Apply it to every TAO model, data action, and
application workflow before launching side-effecting work.
