## What it does

The skill covers `@tanstack/react-virtual` and the framework-agnostic `@tanstack/virtual-core`. The virtualizer works out which items sit in the viewport and places them with absolute positioning, so the DOM node count stays low no matter how big the dataset gets.

Inside you get the base `useVirtualizer` pattern: required `count`, `getScrollElement`, `estimateSize`, plus optional knobs like `overscan`, `lanes` and `getItemKey`. Separate sections walk through variable heights with `measureElement` and the `data-index` attribute, horizontal scrolling, a two-virtualizer grid, and `useWindowVirtualizer` for window scrolling. The package installs with `npm install @tanstack/react-virtual`.

For dynamic heights the skill advises overestimating in `estimateSize`, otherwise rows jump while being measured. One more thing to watch: with `measureElement` you must not set a fixed height on the item, because the content decides the size.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add tanstack-skills/tanstack-skills --skill tanstack-virtual -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/tanstack-virtual/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/tanstack-virtual/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add tanstack-skills/tanstack-skills --skill tanstack-virtual -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/tanstack-virtual/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add tanstack-skills/tanstack-skills --skill tanstack-virtual -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/tanstack-virtual/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install tanstack-skills/tanstack-skills tanstack-virtual
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/tanstack-virtual/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add tanstack-skills/tanstack-skills --skill tanstack-virtual -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/tanstack-skills/tanstack-skills --path plugins/tanstack-virtual/skills/tanstack-virtual
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/tanstack-virtual/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add tanstack-skills/tanstack-skills --skill tanstack-virtual -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

## When to use it
- render a 10000-row list without dropped frames
- build a virtualized grid of rows and columns
- handle variable row heights through element measurement
- add horizontal scrolling to a long card strip
- move scrolling from an inner container to the browser window

## Example prompts
- Set up useVirtualizer for a list of 10000 rows
- Build a virtualized grid with horizontal scrolling using TanStack Virtual
- My rows have different heights — wire up measureElement and data-index

## Overview

TanStack Virtual provides virtualization logic for rendering only visible items in large lists, grids, and tables. It calculates which items are in the viewport and positions them with absolute positioning, keeping DOM node count minimal regardless of dataset size.

**Package:** `@tanstack/react-virtual`
**Core:** `@tanstack/virtual-core` (framework-agnostic)

## Installation

```bash
npm install @tanstack/react-virtual
```

## Core Pattern

```tsx
import { useVirtualizer } from '@tanstack/react-virtual'
function VirtualList() {
  const parentRef = useRef<HTMLDivElement>(null)
  const virtualizer = useVirtualizer({
    count: 10000,
    getScrollElement: () => parentRef.current,
    estimateSize: () => 35, // estimated row height in px
    overscan: 5,
  })
  return (
    <div ref={parentRef} style={{ height: '400px', overflow: 'auto' }}>
      <div
        style={{
          height: `${virtualizer.getTotalSize()}px`,
          width: '100%',
          position: 'relative',
        }}
      >
        {virtualizer.getVirtualItems().map((virtualItem) => (
          <div
            key={virtualItem.key}
            style={{
              position: 'absolute',
              top: 0,
              left: 0,
              width: '100%',
              height: `${virtualItem.size}px`,
              transform: `translateY(${virtualItem.start}px)`,
            }}
          >
            Row {virtualItem.index}
          </div>
        ))}
      </div>
    </div>
  )
}
```
