## What it does

The skill provides reference patterns for `@tanstack/react-table` v8 architecture. Since TanStack Table is completely headless, the assistant learns to assemble column definitions and UI logic without built-in markup. It covers helper utilities like `createColumnHelper`, row models like `getSortedRowModel`, and faceted column filtering.

Passing fresh object references to `useReactTable` on every render triggers infinite re-render loops. The skill enforces memoizing both columns and data with `useMemo` to keep references stable. When fuzzy search is required, the setup also relies on `@tanstack/match-sorter-utils`.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add tanstack-skills/tanstack-skills --skill tanstack-table -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/tanstack-table/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/tanstack-table/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add tanstack-skills/tanstack-skills --skill tanstack-table -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/tanstack-table/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add tanstack-skills/tanstack-skills --skill tanstack-table -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/tanstack-table/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install tanstack-skills/tanstack-skills tanstack-table
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/tanstack-table/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add tanstack-skills/tanstack-skills --skill tanstack-table -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/tanstack-skills/tanstack-skills --path plugins/tanstack-table/skills/tanstack-table
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/tanstack-table/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add tanstack-skills/tanstack-skills --skill tanstack-table -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- Define typed columns using `createColumnHelper`
- Configure multi-sorting and client-side sorting pipelines
- Implement pagination and faceted column filters
- Prevent infinite re-render loops caused by unstable table references

## Example prompts
- Build a users table with @tanstack/react-table including pagination and sorting
- Define order table columns with createColumnHelper and add an action button cell
- Add faceted column filtering for status with unique value counts

## Overview

TanStack Table is a headless UI library for building data tables and datagrids. It provides logic for sorting, filtering, pagination, grouping, expanding, column pinning/ordering/visibility/resizing, and row selection - without rendering any markup or styles.

**Package:** `@tanstack/react-table`
**Utilities:** `@tanstack/match-sorter-utils` (fuzzy filtering)
**Current Version:** v8

## Installation

```bash
npm install @tanstack/react-table
```

## Core Architecture

### Building Blocks

1. **Column Definitions** - describe columns (data access, rendering, features)
2. **Table Instance** - central coordinator with state and APIs
3. **Row Models** - data processing pipeline (filter -> sort -> group -> paginate)
4. **Headers, Rows, Cells** - renderable units

### Critical: Data & Column Stability

```typescript
// WRONG - new references every render, causes infinite loops
const table = useReactTable({
  data: fetchedData.results,     // new ref!
  columns: [{ accessorKey: 'name' }], // new ref!
})
// CORRECT - stable references
const columns = useMemo(() => [...], [])
const data = useMemo(() => fetchedData?.results ?? [], [fetchedData])
const table = useReactTable({ data, columns, getCoreRowModel: getCoreRowModel() })
```

## Column Definitions

### Using createColumnHelper (Recommended)

```typescript
import { createColumnHelper } from '@tanstack/react-table'
type Person = {
  firstName: string
  lastName: string
  age: number
  status: 'active' | 'inactive'
}
const columnHelper = createColumnHelper<Person>()
const columns = [
  // Accessor column (data column)
  columnHelper.accessor('firstName', {
    header: 'First Name',
    cell: info => info.getValue(),
    footer: info => info.column.id,
  }),
  // Accessor with function
  columnHelper.accessor(row => row.lastName, {
    id: 'lastName', // required with accessorFn
    header: () => <span>Last Name</span>,
    cell: info => <i>{info.getValue()}</i>,
  }),
  // Display column (no data, custom rendering)
  columnHelper.display({
    id: 'actions',
    header: 'Actions',
    cell: ({ row }) => (
      <button onClick={() => deleteRow(row.original)}>Delete</button>
    ),
  }),
  // Group column (nested headers)
  columnHelper.group({
    id: 'info',
    header: 'Info',
    columns: [
      columnHelper.accessor('age', { header: 'Age' }),
      columnHelper.accessor('status', { header: 'Status' }),
    ],
  }),
]
```

### Column Options

| Option | Type | Description |
|--------|------|-------------|
| `id` | `string` | Unique identifier (auto-derived from accessorKey) |
| `accessorKey` | `string` | Dot-notation path to row data |
| `accessorFn` | `(row) => any` | Custom accessor function |
| `header` | `string \| (context) => ReactNode` | Header renderer |
