## What it does

The skill covers TanStack Query, a library for managing server state. That means data living on the server: fetch it, cache it, sync it, update it. Inside you get caching, background refetching, the stale-while-revalidate pattern, pagination, infinite scrolling and optimistic updates.

The agent reads through the `@tanstack/react-query` v5 package layout plus the optional `@tanstack/react-query-devtools`. There are sections on query keys, query functions, the `queryOptions` helper, and the `useQuery` and `useMutation` hooks with their `onMutate`, `onSuccess`, `onError` and `onSettled` callbacks. Options like `staleTime`, `gcTime`, `retry` and `enabled` are documented too.

Install the library with `npm install @tanstack/react-query`, and add `-D` for devtools. The skill targets TS/JS and React, Vue, Solid, Svelte, Angular, yet every code sample is React. On a Vue or Svelte project you will be rewriting those snippets by hand, so plan for that before you install.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add tanstack-skills/tanstack-skills --skill tanstack-query -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/tanstack-query/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/tanstack-query/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add tanstack-skills/tanstack-skills --skill tanstack-query -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/tanstack-query/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add tanstack-skills/tanstack-skills --skill tanstack-query -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/tanstack-query/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install tanstack-skills/tanstack-skills tanstack-query
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/tanstack-query/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add tanstack-skills/tanstack-skills --skill tanstack-query -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/tanstack-skills/tanstack-skills --path plugins/tanstack-query/skills/tanstack-query
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/tanstack-query/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add tanstack-skills/tanstack-skills --skill tanstack-query -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**

## When to use it
- set up query caching and data lifetime
- invalidate related queries after a mutation
- add an optimistic update with rollback on error
- enable background refetch on window focus
- split query keys into a hierarchy for targeted invalidation

## Example prompts
- Set up `useQuery` for the todo list with the `['todos']` key and a one-minute `staleTime`.
- Make the mutation optimistic: update the cache in `onMutate`, roll back in `onError`, invalidate in `onSettled`.
- Move the query config into `queryOptions` and reuse it in both `useQuery` and `prefetchQuery`.

## Overview

TanStack Query (formerly React Query) manages server state - data that lives on the server and needs to be fetched, cached, synchronized, and updated. It provides automatic caching, background refetching, stale-while-revalidate patterns, pagination, infinite scrolling, and optimistic updates out of the box.

**Package:** `@tanstack/react-query`
**Devtools:** `@tanstack/react-query-devtools`
**Current Version:** v5

## Installation

```bash
npm install @tanstack/react-query
npm install -D @tanstack/react-query-devtools  # Optional
```

## Setup

```tsx
import { QueryClient, QueryClientProvider } from '@tanstack/react-query'
import { ReactQueryDevtools } from '@tanstack/react-query-devtools'
const queryClient = new QueryClient({
  defaultOptions: {
    queries: {
      staleTime: 1000 * 60, // 1 minute
      gcTime: 1000 * 60 * 5, // 5 minutes (garbage collection)
      retry: 3,
      refetchOnWindowFocus: true,
      refetchOnReconnect: true,
    },
  },
})
function App() {
  return (
    <QueryClientProvider client={queryClient}>
      <YourApp />
      <ReactQueryDevtools initialIsOpen={false} />
    </QueryClientProvider>
  )
}
```

## Core Concepts

### Query Keys

Query keys uniquely identify cached data. They must be serializable arrays:

```tsx
// Simple key
useQuery({ queryKey: ['todos'], queryFn: fetchTodos })
// With variables (dependency array pattern)
useQuery({ queryKey: ['todos', { status, page }], queryFn: fetchTodos })
// Hierarchical keys for invalidation
useQuery({ queryKey: ['todos', todoId], queryFn: () => fetchTodo(todoId) })
useQuery({ queryKey: ['todos', todoId, 'comments'], queryFn: () => fetchComments(todoId) })
// Invalidation matches prefixes:
// queryClient.invalidateQueries({ queryKey: ['todos'] })
// ^ Invalidates ALL queries starting with 'todos'
```

### Query Functions

```tsx
// Query function receives a QueryFunctionContext
useQuery({
  queryKey: ['todos', todoId],
  queryFn: async ({ queryKey, signal, meta }) => {
    const [_key, id] = queryKey
    const response = await fetch(`/api/todos/${id}`, { signal })
    if (!response.ok) throw new Error('Failed to fetch')
    return response.json()
  },
})
// Using the signal for automatic cancellation
useQuery({
  queryKey: ['todos'],
  queryFn: async ({ signal }) => {
    const response = await fetch('/api/todos', { signal })
    return response.json()
