## What it does

TanStack Pacer handles when a function actually runs. Five tools sit inside: a debouncer waits for a pause in calls, a throttler caps execution to one run per interval, a RateLimiter counts calls inside a time window, a Queue processes tasks with configurable concurrency, and a Batcher accumulates items and flushes them together. Everything is typed, with class APIs, factory functions and React hooks.

Install the skill into your project and the agent reaches for it whenever you ask for delayed search input or API protection. Two packages matter: `@tanstack/pacer` for the core and `@tanstack/react-pacer` for hooks. It is beta, so test the behaviour against your own scenarios before shipping.

The real trap is picking the wrong utility. Debounce waits for silence, throttle guarantees periodic runs — search input wants the first, scroll handlers the second. Outside React, call `cancel()` or timers keep hanging around. For network calls use the async variants, which handle cancellation.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add tanstack-skills/tanstack-skills --skill tanstack-pacer -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/tanstack-pacer/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/tanstack-pacer/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add tanstack-skills/tanstack-skills --skill tanstack-pacer -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/tanstack-pacer/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add tanstack-skills/tanstack-skills --skill tanstack-pacer -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/tanstack-pacer/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install tanstack-skills/tanstack-skills tanstack-pacer
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/tanstack-pacer/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add tanstack-skills/tanstack-skills --skill tanstack-pacer -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/tanstack-skills/tanstack-skills --path plugins/tanstack-pacer/skills/tanstack-pacer
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/tanstack-pacer/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add tanstack-skills/tanstack-skills --skill tanstack-pacer -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/tanstack-skills/tanstack-skills/tree/HEAD/plugins/tanstack-pacer/skills/tanstack-pacer/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- debounce a search field so typing does not fire a request per keystroke
- cap how often an external API gets called
- upload files sequentially with controlled concurrency
- group analytics events into a single batch
- reconfigure wait time at runtime with `setOptions`

## Example prompts
- Set up TanStack Pacer and debounce the search input with `wait: 300`
- Wrap the API call in a RateLimiter at 10 requests per minute
- Build a file upload queue with `concurrency: 1`

## Overview

TanStack Pacer provides a unified, type-safe toolkit for controlling function execution timing. It offers class-based APIs, factory functions, and React hooks for debouncing, throttling, rate limiting, queuing, and batching.

**Core:** `@tanstack/pacer`
**React:** `@tanstack/react-pacer`
**Status:** Beta

## Installation

```bash
npm install @tanstack/pacer
npm install @tanstack/react-pacer  # React hooks
```

## Debouncing

Delays execution until after a period of inactivity.

### Class API

```typescript
import { Debouncer } from '@tanstack/pacer'
const debouncer = new Debouncer(
  (query: string) => fetchSearchResults(query),
  {
    wait: 300,            // ms of inactivity before execution
    leading: false,       // Execute on leading edge (default: false)
    trailing: true,       // Execute on trailing edge (default: true)
    maxWait: 1000,        // Force execution after 1s of continuous calls
    enabled: true,
    onExecute: (result) => console.log(result),
  }
)
debouncer.maybeExecute('search term')
debouncer.cancel()
debouncer.getExecutionCount()
debouncer.setOptions({ wait: 500 }) // Dynamic reconfiguration
```

### Factory Function

```typescript
import { debounce } from '@tanstack/pacer'
const debouncedSearch = debounce(
  (query: string) => fetchResults(query),
  { wait: 300 }
)
debouncedSearch('term')
debouncedSearch.cancel()
```

### React Hooks

```typescript
import {
  useDebouncer,
  useDebouncedCallback,
  useDebouncedState,
  useDebouncedValue,
} from '@tanstack/react-pacer'
// Full debouncer instance
const debouncer = useDebouncer(fn, { wait: 300 })
// Simple debounced function
const debouncedFn = useDebouncedCallback(fn, { wait: 300 })
// Debounced state management
const [debouncedValue, setValue] = useDebouncedState(initialValue, { wait: 300 })
// Debounced reactive value
const debouncedValue = useDebouncedValue(reactiveValue, { wait: 300 })
```

## Throttling

Limits execution to at most once per interval.

### Class API

```typescript
import { Throttler } from '@tanstack/pacer'
const throttler = new Throttler(
  (position: { x: number; y: number }) => updatePosition(position),
  {
    wait: 100,            // Minimum interval between executions
    leading: true,        // Execute immediately on first call (default: true)
    trailing: true,       // Execute after interval with last args (default: true)
    enabled: true,
    onExecute: (result) => console.log(result),
  }
)
