## What it does

The skill hands your agent ready patterns for the two things that trip people up in Tailwind: responsive layout and dark mode. It walks through the mobile-first breakpoint system from `sm:` to `2xl:`, container queries with `@container`, and examples like `grid-cols-1 sm:grid-cols-2 md:grid-cols-3`. For dark mode you get both routes: following the OS setting through `prefers-color-scheme`, or manual control with a `.dark` class declared via `@custom-variant`.

It also covers what usually breaks on a live site. Toggling the theme at runtime through `data-theme` or `html.dark`, color tokens in `@theme`, the `color-scheme` property, and a pattern against FOUC — the light flash before styles apply. Combinations such as `sm:dark:bg-*` are in there too, for when responsive and dark variants meet in one class.

The skill activates on its own when the agent sees dark-mode or responsive work. Install is one `npx skills add` command, and the file lands at `~/.claude/skills/tailwindcss-responsive-darkmode/SKILL.md`. Nothing beyond Tailwind itself is needed. If your project already switches themes its own way, expect to adapt the templates to it — otherwise you end up with two competing mechanisms.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add JosiahSiegel/claude-plugin-marketplace --skill tailwindcss-responsive-darkmode -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/tailwindcss-responsive-darkmode/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/tailwindcss-responsive-darkmode/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add JosiahSiegel/claude-plugin-marketplace --skill tailwindcss-responsive-darkmode -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/tailwindcss-responsive-darkmode/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add JosiahSiegel/claude-plugin-marketplace --skill tailwindcss-responsive-darkmode -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/tailwindcss-responsive-darkmode/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install JosiahSiegel/claude-plugin-marketplace tailwindcss-responsive-darkmode
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/tailwindcss-responsive-darkmode/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add JosiahSiegel/claude-plugin-marketplace --skill tailwindcss-responsive-darkmode -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/JosiahSiegel/claude-plugin-marketplace --path plugins/tailwindcss-master/skills/tailwindcss-responsive-darkmode
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/tailwindcss-responsive-darkmode/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add JosiahSiegel/claude-plugin-marketplace --skill tailwindcss-responsive-darkmode -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/JosiahSiegel/claude-plugin-marketplace/tree/HEAD/plugins/tailwindcss-master/skills/tailwindcss-responsive-darkmode/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- set up class-based dark mode instead of the system preference
- stop the light flash on page load
- make a component respond to its container width, not the viewport
- define light and dark color tokens in `@theme`
- combine a responsive and a dark variant in one class

## Example prompts
- Set up dark mode in Tailwind with a `.dark` class and add a toggle
- Why does the light background flash on load? Fix FOUC for dark mode
- Make this card responsive with `@container` queries

# Tailwind CSS Responsive Design & Dark Mode (2025/2026)

## Responsive Design

### Mobile-First Approach (Industry Standard 2025/2026)

Tailwind uses a mobile-first breakpoint system. With over 60% of global web traffic from mobile devices and Google's mobile-first indexing, this approach is essential.

**Key Principle**: Unprefixed utilities apply to ALL screen sizes. Breakpoint prefixes apply at that size AND ABOVE.

```html
<!-- CORRECT: Mobile-first (progressive enhancement) -->
<div class="text-sm md:text-base lg:text-lg">...</div>
<!-- INCORRECT: Desktop-first thinking -->
<div class="lg:text-lg md:text-base text-sm">...</div>
```

### Default Breakpoints

| Prefix | Min Width | Typical Devices | CSS Media Query |
|--------|-----------|-----------------|-----------------|
| (none) | 0px | All mobile phones | All sizes |
| `sm:` | 640px (40rem) | Large phones, small tablets | `@media (min-width: 640px)` |
| `md:` | 768px (48rem) | Tablets (portrait) | `@media (min-width: 768px)` |
| `lg:` | 1024px (64rem) | Tablets (landscape), laptops | `@media (min-width: 1024px)` |
| `xl:` | 1280px (80rem) | Desktops | `@media (min-width: 1280px)` |
| `2xl:` | 1536px (96rem) | Large desktops | `@media (min-width: 1536px)` |

### 2025/2026 Device Coverage

Common device sizes to test:
- **320px**: Older iPhones, smallest supported
