# tailwindcss-mobile-first

A skill that walks your coding agent through mobile-first responsive design with Tailwind CSS v4. Useful when breakpoints, fluid type and grids need to line up instead of fighting each other.

## What it does

The skill activates on responsive work in Tailwind CSS v4: breakpoints `sm:`, `md:`, `lg:`, `xl:`, `2xl:`, utility ordering, responsive typography like `text-base sm:text-lg lg:text-xl`, grids and flexbox, and show/hide across breakpoints with `hidden md:block`. It also covers `max-*` breakpoints for desktop-down overrides, `@container` queries for components that respond to their own width, and safe-area insets for notched devices.

What you get is a breakpoint reference, pattern examples, container-query snippets and recipes for touch versus hover. The workflow is staged: unprefixed utilities set the mobile baseline, then `sm:` through `2xl:` enhance from there. Breakpoints should follow content needs, not device names. One gotcha the skill calls out directly: unprefixed classes apply at every size, while a prefixed utility applies at that breakpoint and above.

Scope is the catch. This is Tailwind CSS v4 material, so on an older version or a different CSS framework the advice drifts away from your codebase. For touch targets it recommends 44px, and it pairs hover states with focus or active because hover alone does nothing on a touchscreen.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add JosiahSiegel/claude-plugin-marketplace --skill tailwindcss-mobile-first -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/tailwindcss-mobile-first/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/tailwindcss-mobile-first/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add JosiahSiegel/claude-plugin-marketplace --skill tailwindcss-mobile-first -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/tailwindcss-mobile-first/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add JosiahSiegel/claude-plugin-marketplace --skill tailwindcss-mobile-first -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/tailwindcss-mobile-first/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install JosiahSiegel/claude-plugin-marketplace tailwindcss-mobile-first
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/tailwindcss-mobile-first/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add JosiahSiegel/claude-plugin-marketplace --skill tailwindcss-mobile-first -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/JosiahSiegel/claude-plugin-marketplace --path plugins/tailwindcss-master/skills/tailwindcss-mobile-first
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/tailwindcss-mobile-first/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add JosiahSiegel/claude-plugin-marketplace --skill tailwindcss-mobile-first -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/JosiahSiegel/claude-plugin-marketplace/tree/HEAD/plugins/tailwindcss-master/skills/tailwindcss-mobile-first/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- map a layout onto Tailwind breakpoints
- build responsive typography that scales smoothly
- make a reusable component respond with `@container` queries
- handle safe-area insets on notched phones
- fix hover effects that never fire on touch

## Example prompts
- rewrite this section mobile-first with Tailwind breakpoints
- why is my `hidden md:block` not behaving?
- make this card responsive with `@container`

# Tailwind Mobile-First Skill

Use this skill for Tailwind CSS mobile-first responsive design: breakpoint strategy, fluid typography and spacing, touch targets, container queries, safe areas, responsive layouts, media, navigation, and mobile performance.

## When to Use This Skill

Use when the user asks for tasks covered by the frontmatter triggers, especially implementation guidance, debugging, architecture choices, production hardening, or performance-sensitive decisions in this domain. Start from this orchestrator, then load the focused reference file that matches the requested detail level.

## Core Workflow

1. Start with unprefixed utilities for the mobile baseline, then progressively enhance with `sm:`, `md:`, `lg:`, `xl:`, and `2xl:`.
2. Choose breakpoints from content needs rather than device names; override Tailwind v4 theme breakpoints only when the design system requires it.
3. Use fluid typography and spacing with `clamp()` for smoother scaling between breakpoints while preserving accessibility via `rem + vw`.
4. Make interactive elements touch-safe with 44px recommended targets, adequate spacing, clear labels, and mobile navigation patterns.
5. Use container queries for reusable components that must respond to their own width instead of viewport width.
