## What it does

The skill covers the CSS-first path in Tailwind v4. There is no `tailwind.config.js` to edit: theme values live in the `@theme` directive inside your CSS, and the `@tailwindcss/vite` plugin handles the build. Inside you get a setup cheat sheet, a v3-to-v4 comparison table, and a walkthrough of the three `@theme` modes: default, `inline` and `reference`.

Colors get their own section. The `oklch(L% C H)` format is broken down by component, with sample values and naming rules for `--color-{name}-{shade}`, `--spacing`, `--font-{family}` and `--breakpoint-{size}`. For dark mode the skill points to `references/dark-mode.md`, which covers media queries, a class, and an attribute.

Before suggesting any token, the skill checks three things: `vite.config.ts` loads `tailwindcss()` from `@tailwindcss/vite`, the CSS entry has `@import 'tailwindcss'`, and `package.json` pins major 4. A project still on v3 with PostCSS and `extend` needs the migration first — otherwise the `@theme` advice lands on nothing.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add existential-birds/beagle --skill tailwind-v4 -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/tailwind-v4/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/tailwind-v4/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add existential-birds/beagle --skill tailwind-v4 -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/tailwind-v4/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add existential-birds/beagle --skill tailwind-v4 -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/tailwind-v4/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install existential-birds/beagle tailwind-v4
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/tailwind-v4/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add existential-birds/beagle --skill tailwind-v4 -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/existential-birds/beagle --path plugins/beagle-react/skills/tailwind-v4
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/tailwind-v4/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add existential-birds/beagle --skill tailwind-v4 -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- move a project from `tailwind.config.js` to `@theme` in CSS
- define a palette in OKLCH without guessing at lightness and chroma
- pick between `@theme`, `@theme inline` and `@theme reference`
- swap the PostCSS plugin for `@tailwindcss/vite`
- set up dark mode with CSS variants

## Example prompts
- set up Tailwind v4 in this project
- define my theme with @theme and oklch colors
- how do I do dark mode in Tailwind v4 without tailwind.config.js

# Tailwind CSS v4 Best Practices

## Quick Reference

**Vite Plugin Setup**:
```ts
// vite.config.ts
import tailwindcss from '@tailwindcss/vite';
import { defineConfig } from 'vite';
export default defineConfig({
  plugins: [tailwindcss()],
});
```

**CSS Entry Point**:
```css
/* src/index.css */
@import 'tailwindcss';
```

**@theme Inline Directive**:
```css
@theme inline {
  --color-primary: oklch(60% 0.24 262);
  --color-surface: oklch(98% 0.002 247);
}
```

## Key Differences from v3

| Feature | v3 | v4 |
|---------|----|----|
| Configuration | tailwind.config.js | @theme in CSS |
| Build Tool | PostCSS plugin | @tailwindcss/vite |
| Colors | rgb() / hsl() | oklch() (default) |
| Theme Extension | extend: {} in JS | CSS variables |
| Dark Mode | darkMode config option | CSS variants |

## @theme Directive Modes

### default (standard mode)
Generates CSS variables that can be referenced elsewhere:
```css
@theme {
  --color-brand: oklch(60% 0.24 262);
}
/* Generates: :root { --color-brand: oklch(...); } */
/* Usage: text-brand → color: var(--color-brand) */
```

**Note**: You can also use `@theme default` explicitly to mark theme values that can be overridden by non-default @theme declarations.

### inline
Inlines values directly without CSS variables (better performance):
```css
@theme inline {
  --color-brand: oklch(60% 0.24 262);
}
/* Usage: text-brand → color: oklch(60% 0.24 262) */
```

### reference
Inlines values as fallbacks without emitting CSS variables:
```css
@theme reference {
  --color-internal: oklch(50% 0.1 180);
}
/* No :root variable, but utilities use fallback */
/* Usage: bg-internal → background-color: var(--color-internal, oklch(50% 0.1 180)) */
```

## OKLCH Color Format

OKLCH provides perceptually uniform colors with better consistency across hues:

```css
oklch(L% C H)
```

- **L (Lightness)**: 0% (black) to 100% (white)
- **C (Chroma)**: 0 (gray) to ~0.4 (vibrant)
- **H (Hue)**: 0-360 degrees (red → yellow → green → blue → magenta)

**Examples**:
```css
--color-sky-500: oklch(68.5% 0.169 237.323);  /* Bright blue */
--color-red-600: oklch(57.7% 0.245 27.325);   /* Vibrant red */
--color-zinc-900: oklch(21% 0.006 285.885);   /* Near-black gray */
```

## CSS Variable Naming

Tailwind v4 uses double-dash CSS variable naming conventions:

```css
@theme {
  /* Colors: --color-{name}-{shade} */
  --color-primary-500: oklch(60% 0.24 262);
  /* Spacing: --spacing multiplier */
