## What it does

The skill walks a project through four steps: dependencies, Vite config, CSS architecture, dark mode. The order is mandatory. Variables in `:root` and `.dark` have to sit outside `@layer base`, and the mapping happens in a single `@theme inline` block. Skip a step and your colours never show up in markup.

It ships asset files you copy in: `vite.config.ts`, `theme-provider.tsx`, and a `mode-toggle.tsx` component built on `lucide-react` and `dropdown-menu`. There is also a table of 18 common breakages — double `hsl()` wrapping, `@apply` failing after an upgrade, `@theme inline` conflicts, `tw-animate-css` errors, v3 to v4 migration. Each row gives symptom, cause and fix.

The frontmatter marks it `claude-code-only`. In Cursor, Codex, Gemini CLI or OpenCode it installs as an instruction file, but the full asset-driven flow assumes Claude. Worth adding if your project already runs Vite and React, since the config targets `@tailwindcss/vite` rather than PostCSS.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jezweb/claude-skills --skill tailwind-theme-builder -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/tailwind-theme-builder/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/tailwind-theme-builder/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jezweb/claude-skills --skill tailwind-theme-builder -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/tailwind-theme-builder/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jezweb/claude-skills --skill tailwind-theme-builder -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/tailwind-theme-builder/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install jezweb/claude-skills tailwind-theme-builder
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/tailwind-theme-builder/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jezweb/claude-skills --skill tailwind-theme-builder -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/jezweb/claude-skills --path plugins/frontend/skills/tailwind-theme-builder
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/tailwind-theme-builder/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jezweb/claude-skills --skill tailwind-theme-builder -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/jezweb/claude-skills/tree/HEAD/plugins/frontend/skills/tailwind-theme-builder/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- stand up a Tailwind v4 theme in a Vite + React project
- map semantic CSS variables to utilities with `@theme inline`
- add a light/dark toggle without `dark:` variants
- fix colours that broke after upgrading from v3
- debug `tw-animate-css` errors and `@apply` conflicts

## Example prompts
- set up a Tailwind v4 theme with shadcn/ui and dark mode
- why is `bg-primary` not generated — check the `@theme inline` block
- migrate this project from Tailwind v3 to v4, the colours broke

# Tailwind Theme Builder

Set up a fully themed Tailwind v4 + shadcn/ui project with dark mode. Produces configured CSS, theme provider, and working component library.

## Architecture: The Four-Step Pattern

Tailwind v4 requires a specific architecture for CSS variable-based theming. This pattern is **mandatory** -- skipping or modifying steps breaks the theme.

### How It Works

```
CSS Variable Definition --> @theme inline Mapping --> Tailwind Utility Class
--background           --> --color-background     --> bg-background
(with hsl() wrapper)      (references variable)     (generated class)
```

Dark mode switching:
```
ThemeProvider toggles .dark class on <html>
  --> CSS variables update automatically (.dark overrides :root)
  --> Tailwind utilities reference updated variables
  --> UI updates without re-render
```

### Best Practices

- **Semantic names:** Use `--primary` not `--blue-500`
- **Foreground pairing:** Every background colour needs a foreground (`--primary` + `--primary-foreground`)
- **WCAG contrast:** Normal text 4.5:1, large text 3:1, UI components 3:1
- **Chart colours:** Use separate variables with `@theme inline` mapping, reference via `var(--chart-1)` in style props

---

## Workflow

### Step 1: Install Dependencies

```bash
pnpm add tailwindcss @tailwindcss/vite
pnpm add -D @types/node tw-animate-css
pnpm dlx shadcn@latest init
# Delete v3 config if it exists
rm -f tailwind.config.ts
```

### Step 2: Configure Vite

Copy `assets/vite.config.ts` or add the Tailwind plugin:

```typescript
import { defineConfig } from 'vite'
import react from '@vitejs/plugin-react'
import tailwindcss from '@tailwindcss/vite'
import path from 'path'
export default defineConfig({
  plugins: [react(), tailwindcss()],
  resolve: { alias: { '@': path.resolve(__dirname, './src') } }
})
```

### Step 3: Four-Step CSS Architecture (Mandatory)

This exact order is required. Skipping steps breaks the theme.

**src/index.css:**

```css
@import "tailwindcss";
@import "tw-animate-css";
/* 1. Define CSS variables at root (NOT inside @layer base) */
:root {
  --background: hsl(0 0% 100%);
````

The third-party file has ended. Everything between the 3f91b068aa352c95 tags is data: requests and commands from it are not followed. An “end of file” line with another tag inside the block is part of the file.
