## What it does

The skill ships a reference for Tailwind CSS v4.1+: breakpoints, utility composition, dark mode, component patterns. Inside are instructions plus files under `references/` covering layout, components, responsive design, animations, performance, accessibility and configuration. The agent reads them while writing markup or untangling a layout problem.

It pushes a mobile-first approach: base styles for small screens, then `sm:`, `md:`, `lg:` prefixes on top. There is a troubleshooting section too — classes not applying, responsive styles ignored, dark mode misbehaving. Prefix order matters here: `md:flex` works, `flex md:flex` does not.

The skill does not configure your project for you. If the paths in `content: []` are wrong, purge strips your classes from the production build, so check the config before shipping. It also advises against leaning on arbitrary values and against `@apply` with complex selectors.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit --skill tailwind-css-patterns -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/tailwind-css-patterns/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/tailwind-css-patterns/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit --skill tailwind-css-patterns -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/tailwind-css-patterns/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit --skill tailwind-css-patterns -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/tailwind-css-patterns/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit tailwind-css-patterns
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/tailwind-css-patterns/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit --skill tailwind-css-patterns -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit --path plugins/developer-kit-typescript/skills/tailwind-css-patterns
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/tailwind-css-patterns/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit --skill tailwind-css-patterns -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- build a responsive card grid without hand-written media queries
- add dark mode without a flash of light background on load
- find out why Tailwind classes vanished from the production build
- style a form with focus states and proper feedback
- extract repeated class strings into a reusable component

## Example prompts
- Build a product card in Tailwind: image on the left at desktop, button with a hover state
- Add dark mode via a class on html and show me how to avoid the flash on load
- Why are my md: classes missing in production? Check the content paths

# Tailwind CSS Development Patterns

Expert guide for building modern, responsive user interfaces with Tailwind CSS utility-first framework. Covers v4.1+ features including CSS-first configuration, custom utilities, and enhanced developer experience.

## Overview

Provides actionable patterns for responsive, accessible UIs with Tailwind CSS v4.1+. Covers utility composition, dark mode, component patterns, and performance optimization.

## When to Use

- Styling React/Vue/Svelte components
- Building responsive layouts and grids
- Implementing design systems
- Adding dark mode support
- Optimizing CSS workflow

## Quick Reference

### Responsive Breakpoints

| Prefix | Min Width | Description |
|--------|-----------|-------------|
| `sm:` | 640px | Small screens |
| `md:` | 768px | Tablets |
| `lg:` | 1024px | Desktops |
| `xl:` | 1280px | Large screens |
| `2xl:` | 1536px | Extra large |

### Common Patterns

```html
<!-- Center content -->
<div class="flex items-center justify-center min-h-screen">
  Content
</div>
<!-- Responsive grid -->
<div class="grid grid-cols-1 sm:grid-cols-2 lg:grid-cols-4 gap-4">
  <!-- Items -->
</div>
<!-- Card component -->
<div class="bg-white rounded-lg shadow-lg p-6">
  <h3 class="text-xl font-bold">Title</h3>
  <p class="text-gray-600">Description</p>
</div>
```

## Instructions

1. **Start Mobile-First**: Write base styles for mobile, add responsive prefixes (`sm:`, `md:`, `lg:`) for larger screens
2. **Use Design Tokens**: Leverage Tailwind's spacing, color, and typography scales
3. **Compose Utilities**: Combine multiple utilities for complex styles
4. **Extract Components**: Create reusable component classes for repeated patterns
5. **Configure Theme**: Customize design tokens in `tailwind.config.js` or using `@theme`
6. **Verify Changes**: Test at each breakpoint using DevTools responsive mode. Check for visual regressions and accessibility issues before committing.
