## What it does

This skill treats tabs as a way to swap the content panel without a page navigation. It is useful when you build a settings screen, a detail view or a dashboard with several data sets. Inside there is a table of when tabs work and when they do not, three visual styles (underline, contained, pill), plus the anatomy of the strip and the panel and the states of an active versus inactive tab.

Separate sections cover overflow and vertical tabs. When the strip runs out of width, the skill advises starting with a native `<select>` carrying the same options, then a horizontally scrolling strip with a fade at the edge, and only then a "More" menu. For 5 or more tabs next to a sidebar it suggests the vertical layout with a left border accent.

Keyboard handling follows the roving tabindex pattern: arrow keys move focus, `Home` and `End` jump to the ends. If switching a tab fires a network request, the skill advises manual activation on `Enter` so you do not trigger needless fetches. One thing to watch: never disable the active tab — unavailable content belongs inside the panel with an explanation. The skill picks up in `**/*.tsx`, `**/*.jsx` files and in `components/**` and `ui/**` directories.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dembrandt/dembrandt-skills --skill tab-navigation -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/tab-navigation/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/tab-navigation/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dembrandt/dembrandt-skills --skill tab-navigation -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/tab-navigation/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dembrandt/dembrandt-skills --skill tab-navigation -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/tab-navigation/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install dembrandt/dembrandt-skills tab-navigation
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/tab-navigation/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dembrandt/dembrandt-skills --skill tab-navigation -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/dembrandt/dembrandt-skills --path skills/tab-navigation
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/tab-navigation/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dembrandt/dembrandt-skills --skill tab-navigation -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- decide between tabs and a sidebar for a settings page
- split several reports across tabs that share one heading
- build a tab strip that survives a narrow screen
- wire up keyboard switching between tabs
- pick a tab style that matches the surrounding layout

## Example prompts
- add tabs to this product detail page
- design a settings screen with tab navigation
- organise these data views with a tab strip

# Tab Navigation

Tabs organise related content under a shared context. The tab strip communicates the full set of available views; switching tabs swaps the content panel without a page navigation. They work best when all views share a heading, a primary action, or a common subject — tabs that have nothing to do with each other belong in separate pages.

---

## When to Use Tabs — and When Not To

| Use tabs when… | Use something else when… |
|---|---|
| 2–7 views share a common context (same record, same settings section) | There are more than 7–8 tabs — use a sidebar or section nav instead |
| Users switch between views frequently during a session | The content is sequential (use a stepper/wizard instead) |
| All tabs are equally valid entry points | One view is clearly primary — put the rest in a secondary nav or overflow |
| The views share a header or set of page-level actions | Each "tab" requires a different header and layout — use separate pages |

---

## Tab Types

Choose the visual style that fits the layout context.

### Underline / Indicator Tabs
A horizontal strip with a sliding underline or bottom border on the active tab. The lightest treatment — appropriate for page-level tabs where the tab strip sits inside the content area.
