# system-text-json-net11

A skill that tells the agent how to use three new System.Text.Json APIs in .NET 11 instead of writing the old workarounds.

## What it does

The skill covers three additions to `System.Text.Json` in .NET 11: the built-in `JsonNamingPolicy.PascalCase`, the generic `JsonSerializerOptions.GetTypeInfo<T>()`, and `TryGetTypeInfo<T>(out JsonTypeInfo<T>? info)`. It ships a decision table mapping what the user asks for to the exact line to write, plus what never to write, with C# samples. The agent applies the API and runs the code rather than explaining it.

Step 0 is an SDK check. `dotnet --list-sdks` has to show an `11.x` SDK, or a later one with the `net11.0` targeting pack. If nothing suitable is installed and you asked for the sample to be run, the skill pulls the .NET 11 SDK through the official `dotnet-install` script into a project-local directory. No admin rights, no machine-wide `PATH` changes.

One catch worth knowing before you rely on it: `GetTypeInfo<T>()` throws `NotSupportedException` (`NoMetadataForType`) unless the options carry a `TypeInfoResolver`, which is why the samples set `TypeInfoResolver = new DefaultJsonTypeInfoResolver()`. Dictionary keys need `DictionaryKeyPolicy` — `PropertyNamingPolicy` alone leaves them untouched. And the whole thing is gated on `net11.0` or later.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill system-text-json-net11 -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/system-text-json-net11/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/system-text-json-net11/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill system-text-json-net11 -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/system-text-json-net11/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill system-text-json-net11 -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/system-text-json-net11/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install dotnet/skills system-text-json-net11
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/system-text-json-net11/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill system-text-json-net11 -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/dotnet/skills --path plugins/dotnet11/skills/system-text-json-net11
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/system-text-json-net11/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill system-text-json-net11 -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- emit PascalCase JSON property names without a custom JsonNamingPolicy subclass
- rename dictionary keys during serialization
- get a JsonTypeInfo<T> without casting from the non-generic type
- probe whether a type's metadata is resolved without try/catch
- build and run a net11.0 sample when no matching SDK is installed

## Example prompts
- Set PascalCase for JSON property names on net11.0
- Make the dictionary keys PascalCase too
- Check with TryGetTypeInfo<T> whether this type's metadata is resolved

# System.Text.Json — .NET 11

Three APIs were added to `System.Text.Json` in .NET 11. This skill tells you exactly
when to reach for each one, what to write, what **not** to write, and how to prove the
result runs. Do not describe these APIs to the user — apply them, then run the code and
show the output.

| API | Replaces the pre-.NET-11 workaround of... |
| --- | --- |
| `JsonNamingPolicy.PascalCase` (static property) | writing a custom `JsonNamingPolicy` subclass or hand-annotating every member with `[JsonPropertyName]` |
| `JsonSerializerOptions.GetTypeInfo<T>()` | calling non-generic `GetTypeInfo(typeof(T))` and casting to `JsonTypeInfo<T>` |
| `JsonSerializerOptions.TryGetTypeInfo<T>(out JsonTypeInfo<T>? info)` | wrapping `GetTypeInfo` in `try`/`catch` to probe availability |

## Step 0 — Make the requested `net11.0` validation possible

These APIs only exist in the .NET 11 base class library. Before writing code:

1. Run `dotnet --list-sdks` and confirm an SDK that can target `net11.0` is present — an
   `11.x` SDK, or a later SDK with the `net11.0` targeting pack.
2. If the user explicitly asks you to run the sample and no suitable SDK is installed,
   use the official `dotnet-install` script to install the current .NET 11 SDK into a
   temporary or project-local directory. Prefer the GA channel build. Use a preview only
   when GA is not yet available or the user explicitly requested a preview. Do not require
   administrator access, change the machine-wide `PATH`, or replace an installed SDK.
