## What it does

The skill walks through probe design around critical user journeys: login, search, the core action, checkout. A probe asserts the outcome — data loaded, auth succeeded, results appeared — not the status code. A login page that returns 200 and never authenticates passes a naive uptime check and fails a probe.

It covers alerting integration, downtime budget math for an SLA, multi-region execution, and where QA ends and SRE begins. You get a frequency and timeout table for common probes, a runbook template for the 3 AM page, and a failure-mode section. Probes stay short: under 30 seconds of wall clock each, zero retries. A slow probe that still passes hides a degradation users already feel.

Before you start, you need dedicated synthetic test accounts in production and a way to keep them out of analytics, billing and email campaigns. Otherwise probe traffic skews every downstream number and created records pile up. This is not the skill for safe rollout techniques — that is testing-in-production — and not for designing tests from prod telemetry, which is observability-driven-testing.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add petrkindlmann/qa-skills --skill synthetic-monitoring -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/synthetic-monitoring/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/synthetic-monitoring/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add petrkindlmann/qa-skills --skill synthetic-monitoring -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/synthetic-monitoring/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add petrkindlmann/qa-skills --skill synthetic-monitoring -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/synthetic-monitoring/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install petrkindlmann/qa-skills synthetic-monitoring
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/synthetic-monitoring/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add petrkindlmann/qa-skills --skill synthetic-monitoring -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/petrkindlmann/qa-skills --path skills/synthetic-monitoring
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/synthetic-monitoring/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add petrkindlmann/qa-skills --skill synthetic-monitoring -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/petrkindlmann/qa-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/synthetic-monitoring/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- design probes for the critical user journeys
- tune alerts so a single blip does not page on-call
- work out the downtime budget behind an SLA
- run checks from several regions and rule out local failures
- write a runbook that makes a 3 AM page actionable

## Example prompts
- help me design synthetic probes for login and checkout
- what frequency and timeout should the search and API probes use
- draft an on-call runbook for a probe that fails at 3 AM

<objective>
Synthetic monitoring runs scripted tests against production on a schedule, 24/7. It catches outages, performance degradation, and broken flows before real users report them — at 3 AM when traffic is zero, probes are the only thing checking your app works. A login page that always returns 200 but never authenticates passes a naive uptime check; a synthetic probe that asserts the dashboard loads catches it. This skill covers probe design, alerting integration, SLA validation, multi-region execution, and the runbook discipline that keeps a 3 AM page actionable.

## Discovery Questions

Check `.agents/qa-project-context.md` first. If it exists, use it as context and skip questions already answered there. Each answer changes the probe set, the alerting config, or the SLA math.

**Critical flows** (decides which probes you write):
- What are the 5-10 most important user journeys (login, search, checkout, signup, core workflow)? These become your probe list.
- Which flows, if broken, cause immediate revenue loss or churn? These get the shortest frequency and page on-call.
