## What it does

This skill covers authoring Synthetic Monitoring (SM) checks in Grafana Cloud. SM runs k6 as an availability engine: each execution is one iteration with one VU from a chosen probe location on a fixed schedule. Success means the user journey works right now from that region. There are no `stages`, no VU ramping and no `thresholds`, because this is not load testing.

The trap it spends the most time on: a bare `check()` does not fail an execution. It only records `probe_checks_total` and `probe_check_success_rate`, while `probe_success` stays at 1. The skill points you to `expect()` from the k6-testing module, or to `check() || fail()`. It also walks through secrets, deterministic scripts, browser locators that survive layout changes, local validation with `k6 run`, deployment via UI, API or Terraform, and rollback.

Know the limits before you start. `open()`, `fs` and `grpc.load()` are unsupported, so local modules have to be bundled into the script. Browser checks get 1GB RAM on public probes, and heavy pages die with `Target has crashed`. The UI rejects minified browser scripts, so those go out through API or Terraform. And none of this is for load testing: reach for the `grafana-k6` plugin or Grafana Cloud k6 instead.

## Requirements
- Works with: Grafana, Terraform

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add grafana/skills --skill synthetic-monitoring-checks -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/synthetic-monitoring-checks/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/synthetic-monitoring-checks/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add grafana/skills --skill synthetic-monitoring-checks -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/synthetic-monitoring-checks/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add grafana/skills --skill synthetic-monitoring-checks -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/synthetic-monitoring-checks/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install grafana/skills synthetic-monitoring-checks
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/synthetic-monitoring-checks/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add grafana/skills --skill synthetic-monitoring-checks -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/grafana/skills --path skills/grafana-cloud/synthetic-monitoring-checks
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/synthetic-monitoring-checks/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add grafana/skills --skill synthetic-monitoring-checks -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/grafana/skills/tree/HEAD/skills/grafana-cloud/synthetic-monitoring-checks/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- write an uptime check for a login or checkout flow
- turn an existing k6 script or OpenAPI spec into an SM check
- pick the simplest check type instead of defaulting to browser
- make a failed assertion actually fail `probe_success`
- validate a script locally before deploying and roll back a bad one

## Example prompts
- Write a Synthetic Monitoring check for the login page, with expect() assertions
- Convert this k6 script into an SM check and tell me which check type is enough here
- Why doesn't my check fail probe_success? Look at the script and fix the assertions

  Author Grafana Cloud Synthetic Monitoring checks, with deep coverage of k6 scripted and
  browser checks: SM's single-VU/single-iteration execution model, assertions that actually
  fail probe_success (expect() and fail() vs bare check()), secrets, deterministic scripts,
  robust browser locators, local validation with k6 run, deployment via UI/API/Terraform,
  verifying probe_success, and rollback. Also helps choose the simplest sufficient check
  type (HTTP/ping/DNS/TCP, MultiHTTP, scripted, browser). Use when writing a synthetic
  check, monitoring a login/checkout/signup flow in production, converting a k6 script or
  an OpenAPI spec into a check, authoring a browser check, validating a user journey, or
  asking "is my site up from multiple regions". NOT for load, stress, or performance testing — SM runs one
  iteration per execution; for load tests use the grafana-k6 plugin or Grafana Cloud k6.
  For the broad Grafana Cloud Testing overview (SM + k6 Cloud + Faro), use the testing skill.

## Reliability monitoring, not load testing

Synthetic Monitoring (SM) runs k6 as a **reliability/availability engine**: every check
execution runs **one iteration with one VU** from each selected probe location on a fixed
schedule. Success means "the user journey works right now, from this region" — detect
outages before your customers do.

Do **not** apply load-testing idioms. There are no VUs to ramp, no `stages`, no load
profiles, no soak/stress/spike phases, and no `thresholds` over aggregated traffic.
Vocabulary: *check*, *probe*, *execution*, *uptime*, *reachability*, *user journey
validation* — never "load test", "ramping", or "VUs".

**If the user actually wants load or performance testing** (throughput, latency under
load, breakpoints), stop: that is Grafana Cloud k6 / the `grafana-k6` plugin's `k6` skill,
