## What it does

The skill steers the agent to the right API. It ships a decision tree: per-pixel color work goes to `.colorEffect`, pixel displacement to `.distortionEffect`, a full layer with an overlay to `.layerEffect`, geometry-aware modifiers to `.visualEffect`, custom drawing to `Canvas`, and iOS 26 glassmorphism to `.glassEffect()` or `GlassEffectContainer`. Escalation order is built-in modifiers, then `.visualEffect`, then `Canvas`, and Metal shaders last.

Shaders live in a `.metal` file inside your app target. Functions carry the `[[ stitchable ]]` attribute, and SwiftUI generates the Swift binding through `ShaderLibrary.<functionName>`. One library per app target; arguments arrive as `.float`, `.float2`, `.color` or `.image`. Three recipes are worked out end to end: a touch ripple on `.layerEffect`, a holographic shimmer on `.colorEffect`, and CRT scanlines. Each one shows both the Metal source and the Swift call site.

Platform support is the hard edge. The shader modifiers need iOS 17.0+, iPadOS 17.0+, Mac Catalyst 17.0+, macOS 14.0+, tvOS 17.0+ or visionOS 1.0+, and watchOS is out — fall back to gradients, blur or `Canvas` there. Underestimate `maxSampleOffset` on a `.layerEffect` and your effect clips at the view bounds; overestimate it and you burn GPU time for nothing. That slot is also the most expensive of the three, because it can sample anywhere inside the offset.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AThevon/genjutsu --skill swiftui-graphics -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/swiftui-graphics/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/swiftui-graphics/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AThevon/genjutsu --skill swiftui-graphics -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/swiftui-graphics/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AThevon/genjutsu --skill swiftui-graphics -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/swiftui-graphics/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install AThevon/genjutsu swiftui-graphics
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/swiftui-graphics/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AThevon/genjutsu --skill swiftui-graphics -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/AThevon/genjutsu --path skills/_jutsu/swiftui-graphics
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/swiftui-graphics/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AThevon/genjutsu --skill swiftui-graphics -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- build a touch ripple that displaces pixels around the tap point
- add a holographic shimmer to a card while keeping luminance intact
- apply CRT scanlines and slight chromatic aberration to an image
- pick between `.colorEffect`, `.distortionEffect` and `.layerEffect` for a given effect
- react to a view's position in a scroll view without `GeometryReader`

## Example prompts
- Build a touch ripple with a `.layerEffect` using the `ripple` shader and amplitude 0.05
- Add a holographic shimmer to the card via `.colorEffect` inside a `TimelineView(.animation)`
- Which modifier should I use to move pixels rather than change their color?

## Decision Tree: Which API?

| Need | API |
|---|---|
| Pixel-level color manipulation | `.colorEffect(ShaderLibrary....)` |
| Pixel position / distortion | `.distortionEffect(ShaderLibrary....)` |
| Full layer with overlay (mix shader + bg) | `.layerEffect(ShaderLibrary....)` |
| View modifier with geometry context | `.visualEffect { content, geometry in }` |
| Custom drawing (paths, gradients) | `Canvas { context, size in }` |
| iOS 26+ glassmorphism | `.glassEffect()` / `GlassEffectContainer` |
| Performance dump | `Canvas` with `.opaque(true)` then export |

> **Default order of escalation:** built-in modifiers -> `.visualEffect` -> `Canvas` -> Metal shader. Reach for shaders only when the effect is per-pixel and animated.
