## What it does

The skill instructs coding assistants on combining Svelte 5 runes with SvelteKit static site generation via `adapter-static`. Module-scoped runes fail during static prerendering because they do not serialize cleanly into HTML. As a result, the skill directs global state into classic `writable()` and `derived()` stores.

Components bridge external stores into rune state via manual subscription inside `$effect()`. This step writes incoming store values to `$state()`, which downstream `$derived()` declarations can safely consume. Direct dollar-sign auto-subscriptions remain invalid inside `$derived()`.

Client-only logic stays guarded with the `browser` check from `$app/environment`. Omitting this guard causes prerendering to fail on client globals like `localStorage` or timestamps.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill svelte5-runes-static -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/svelte5-runes-static/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/svelte5-runes-static/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill svelte5-runes-static -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/svelte5-runes-static/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill svelte5-runes-static -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/svelte5-runes-static/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills svelte5-runes-static
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/svelte5-runes-static/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill svelte5-runes-static -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --path toolchains/javascript/frameworks/svelte5-runes-static
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/svelte5-runes-static/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill svelte5-runes-static -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- bridge traditional Svelte stores to local rune state using $effect
- prevent frozen state after prerendering with SvelteKit adapter-static
- fix invalid store auto-subscription errors inside $derived
- guard client-only initializations using the browser environment flag

## Example prompts
- Refactor this global store to writable and bridge it into Svelte 5 runes for adapter-static.
- Fix the dollar-sign store subscription error inside this $derived rune.
- Set up prerendering guards with the browser check to avoid hydration mismatch.

# Svelte 5 Runes with adapter-static (SvelteKit)

## Overview

Build static-first SvelteKit applications with Svelte 5 runes without breaking hydration. Apply these patterns when using `adapter-static` (prerendering) and combining global stores with component-local runes.

## Related Skills

- `svelte` (Svelte 5 runes core patterns)
- `sveltekit` (adapters, deployment, SSR/SSG patterns)
- `typescript-core` (TypeScript patterns and validation)
- `vitest` (unit testing patterns)

## Core Expertise

Building static-first Svelte 5 applications using runes mode with proper state management patterns that survive prerendering and hydration.

## Critical Compatibility Rules

### ❌ NEVER: Runes in Module Scope with adapter-static

**Problem**: Runes don't hydrate properly after static prerendering
```typescript
// ❌ BROKEN - State becomes frozen after SSG
export function createStore() {
  let state = $state({ count: 0 });
  return {
    get count() { return state.count; },
    increment: () => { state.count++; }
  };
}
```

**Why it fails**:
- `adapter-static` prerenders components to HTML
- Runes in module scope don't serialize/deserialize
- State becomes inert/frozen after hydration
- Reactivity completely breaks

**Solution**: Use traditional `writable()` stores for global state
```typescript
// ✅ WORKS - Traditional stores hydrate correctly
import { writable } from 'svelte/store';
export function createStore() {
  const count = writable(0);
  return {
    count,
    increment: () => count.update(n => n + 1)
  };
}
```

### ❌ NEVER: $ Auto-subscription Inside $derived

**Problem**: Runes mode disables `$` auto-subscription syntax
