## What it does

The skill helps marketplace teams find the primary growth bottleneck by diagnosing transaction data. It uses principles and frameworks gathered from 6 guests and articles in Lenny's Podcast and Newsletter, including case studies from Airbnb and Facebook Marketplace.

It includes structured playbooks: a ranked list of 12 levers to grow supply, a selection checklist, and decision trees for market density. Early liquidity takes priority. Polishing the product or building brand awareness waits until transactions actually happen.

Trying to expand across too many channels early on will stall growth. Because of this, the skill limits the initial strategy to at most two or three supply channels and insists on constraining the launch by geography or category. Further framework details reside in `references/artifacts.md`.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add RefoundAI/lenny-skills --skill supply-demand-balance -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/supply-demand-balance/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/supply-demand-balance/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add RefoundAI/lenny-skills --skill supply-demand-balance -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/supply-demand-balance/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add RefoundAI/lenny-skills --skill supply-demand-balance -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/supply-demand-balance/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install RefoundAI/lenny-skills supply-demand-balance
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/supply-demand-balance/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add RefoundAI/lenny-skills --skill supply-demand-balance -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/RefoundAI/lenny-skills --path skills/supply-demand-balance
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/supply-demand-balance/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add RefoundAI/lenny-skills --skill supply-demand-balance -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- diagnose whether supply or demand limits marketplace transactions
- prioritize two or three channels to bootstrap initial supply
- constrain market scope by geography or category to build density
- resolve trade-offs between supply and demand needs during feature prioritization

## Example prompts
- Analyze our transaction data to diagnose if we are supply or demand constrained.
- Help me pick two acquisition levers to bootstrap supply using the 12 levers framework.
- How should we constrain our initial marketplace launch by geography or category?

# Supply Demand Balance

Master marketplace liquidity by identifying bottlenecks and strategically scaling the harder side of the market.

Help the user with supply demand balance using insights from 6 guests and posts across Lenny's Podcast and Newsletter.

## How to Help

1. **Diagnose constraints** - Analyze transaction data to determine if supply or demand is the primary factor limiting your current growth.
2. **Select acquisition levers** - Evaluate and prioritize the top two or three channels most likely to successfully bootstrap your initial supply side.
3. **Define density targets** - Establish clear thresholds for supply variety and volume needed to keep the demand side engaged.
4. **Resolve trade-offs** - Use guiding principles to navigate conflict between supply and demand needs during product prioritization.

## Core Principles

### Concentrate resources on supply first
From "How to Kickstart and Scale a Marketplace Business – Part 2: Cracking the Chicken-and-Egg Problem 🐣 - Supply vs. Demand": "The lesson we took away from this was that all that matters is supply. So we decided to focus on that above all else. We postponed building brand and delightful product until we had liquidity. Dozens of other startups took another direction. Case after case, it proved a mistake."

Achieve early liquidity by focusing nearly all resources on growing supply before investing heavily in brand building or product polish.

### Pinpoint the primary bottleneck
From "How To Know If You're Supply or Demand Constrained 🤹‍♂️ - Phase 2 of Kickstarting and Scaling a Marketplace Business": "It simply means that your biggest constraint to driving additional transactions is a lack of supply (e.g. Airbnb Homes, Uber drivers) or a lack of demand (e.g. Rover dog owners, TaskRabbit customers). In theory, you always want more of both, but in many cases adding more of one side doesn’t actually lead to growth. Your resources are better spent elsewhere."

Growth depends on identifying which side of the marketplace is currently limiting transactions so you do not waste resources on the side that is already ready.

### Focus on a maximum of three levers
