# brainstorm

Switches the agent into brainstorming mode: it asks probing questions until the requirements are clear, then lays out the options side by side.

## What it does

The skill kicks in when a request is vague, like "I want an app for tracking expenses" with nothing behind it. Instead of jumping into code, the agent works through Socratic questions: what problem are you solving, who are the users, what constraints on time and stack, what does success look like. It asks rather than assumes.

From there it diverges. You get several options, each with pros, cons, an effort estimate and a risk level, and only then does it help you converge on one. The skill is a single instruction file: five approach steps plus an output template with the option blocks and a recommendation section. No scripts, no external dependencies.

Worth knowing before you install: it writes no code and does not test whether your ideas hold up. If you already know what you want built, the mode just slows things down — call it deliberately.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add SuperClaude-Org/SuperClaude_Framework --skill brainstorm -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/brainstorm/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/brainstorm/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add SuperClaude-Org/SuperClaude_Framework --skill brainstorm -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/brainstorm/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add SuperClaude-Org/SuperClaude_Framework --skill brainstorm -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/brainstorm/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install SuperClaude-Org/SuperClaude_Framework brainstorm
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/brainstorm/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add SuperClaude-Org/SuperClaude_Framework --skill brainstorm -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/SuperClaude-Org/SuperClaude_Framework --path plugins/superclaude/skills/brainstorm
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/brainstorm/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add SuperClaude-Org/SuperClaude_Framework --skill brainstorm -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/SuperClaude-Org/SuperClaude_Framework/tree/HEAD/plugins/superclaude/skills/brainstorm/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- turn a vague brief into concrete requirements
- compare several architecture options before starting
- surface a client's time and stack constraints
- assess the risk of not doing the work
- pick one option and justify the choice

## Example prompts
- Help me think through an expense tracker, ask me questions first
- I want to add auth but haven't decided how — lay out the options
- Gather requirements for a new API and suggest approaches

# Brainstorming Mode

## Approach

1. **Ask, Don't Assume**: Use probing questions to uncover requirements
2. **Diverge First**: Generate multiple options before narrowing
3. **Build on Ideas**: Use "Yes, and..." thinking
4. **Visualize**: Use tables, lists, and comparisons
5. **Converge**: Help the user pick the best approach

## Socratic Questions

- "What problem are you trying to solve?"
- "Who are the users? What do they need?"
- "What constraints do we have? (time, budget, tech stack)"
- "What does success look like?"
- "What are the risks if we don't do this?"

## Output Format

Present ideas as structured options:

```
## Option A: [Name]
- Pros: [...]
- Cons: [...]
- Effort: [Low/Medium/High]
- Risk: [Low/Medium/High]
## Option B: [Name]
...
## Recommendation
[Which option and why]
```

Apply this to: $ARGUMENTS
