# supabase-server

Tells the agent how to write Edge Functions, Hono apps and webhook handlers on @supabase/server: auth modes, clients, inbound request checks.

## What it does

The skill fires when the agent is about to write or edit a file that imports `@supabase/server` or a sub-path like `@supabase/server/core`. It also loads during planning: if a plan mentions `withSupabase`, `createSupabaseContext`, `createAdminClient`, `createContextClient`, `verifyAuth`, `verifyCredentials` or `extractCredentials`, the skill comes in before any code is drafted.

Inside are the rules for the four `auth` modes: `'user'`, `'publishable'`, `'secret'`, `'none'`. Array syntax such as `auth: ['user', 'secret']` is first-match-wins, and a present-but-invalid JWT rejects with `InvalidJwtError` (`INVALID_JWT`) instead of quietly falling through to the next mode. Migration gets its own section: `allow:` was renamed to `auth:`, the `'always'` and `'public'` values are gone, and `authType` became `authMode`. The skill advises against the legacy `SUPABASE_ANON_KEY` and `SUPABASE_SERVICE_ROLE_KEY` keys.

For Edge Functions there is a trap worth knowing before you debug for an hour. The platform demands a valid JWT on every request by default. Functions running `auth: 'publishable'`, `auth: 'secret'` or `auth: 'none'` need `verify_jwt = false` in `supabase/config.toml`, or the request is rejected before it reaches your handler. Deno imports go through the `npm:` specifier. The bundled `@supabase/server/adapters/*` are marked deprecated in favour of the `@supabase/middleware` bridge.

## Requirements
- Works with: Supabase

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add supabase/server --skill supabase-server -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/supabase-server/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/supabase-server/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add supabase/server --skill supabase-server -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/supabase-server/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add supabase/server --skill supabase-server -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/supabase-server/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install supabase/server supabase-server
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/supabase-server/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add supabase/server --skill supabase-server -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/supabase/server --path skills/supabase-server
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/supabase-server/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add supabase/server --skill supabase-server -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/supabase/server/tree/HEAD/skills/supabase-server/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- write an Edge Function that validates an inbound JWT
- pick an `auth` mode for a webhook with no user
- migrate old code from `allow:` to `auth:`
- swap `SUPABASE_ANON_KEY` for a publishable key
- wire a Supabase client into a Hono app

## Example prompts
- Write an Edge Function on `@supabase/server` with `auth: 'user'` that returns the current user's profile
- Build a webhook handler with `auth: 'secret'` and tell me what to change in `supabase/config.toml`
- Refactor this function: drop `Deno.serve` and `SUPABASE_SERVICE_ROLE_KEY`, move it to `@supabase/server`

Trigger **before** writing or modifying any file that imports from `@supabase/server` (or sub-paths like `@supabase/server/core`); calls `withSupabase`, `createSupabaseContext`, `createAdminClient`, `createContextClient`, `verifyAuth`, `verifyCredentials`, or `extractCredentials`; configures an `auth:` mode (`'none'` | `'publishable'` | `'secret'` | `'user'`, or keyed variants like `'secret:*'`); or lives under `supabase/functions/` and authenticates an inbound request. Also trigger during planning — if a plan mentions any of the above, load the skill before drafting code; do not extrapolate `auth:` values or auth modes from neighboring functions. Also trigger when you see legacy patterns to migrate to this package — `Deno.serve`, `createClient(Deno.env.get('SUPABASE_URL'))`, imports from `esm.sh/@supabase` or `deno.land/std`, usage of `SUPABASE_ANON_KEY` / `SUPABASE_SERVICE_ROLE_KEY`, or the deprecated `allow:` config option / removed `'always'` / `'public'` mode values / removed `authType` field.

> **The config option is `auth`, not `allow`.** `allow` was renamed to `auth` to match CLI terminology and read more naturally. The legacy `allow` key still works (with a one-time `console.warn`) but is deprecated and will be removed in a future major release. **Always emit `auth` in new code** — e.g. `withSupabase({ auth: 'user' }, ...)`. If you encounter `allow:` in existing code, migrate it to `auth:` (find-and-replace, the values are identical).
