## What it does

This skill turns the assistant into a careful Supabase developer. It keeps in mind that the database is reached through the Supabase client, that Row Level Security goes on every table holding user data, and that the service role stays reserved for admin work. Policies are expected for SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE and DELETE, and they should be tested before deployment.

The rules cover four areas. Schema: PostgreSQL types and constraints, foreign keys, indexes on frequently queried columns, views for complex queries, soft deletes. Auth: OAuth providers, reactive handling of auth state changes, session management, password reset and email verification. Realtime: subscriptions for live updates, presence for online status, tuned subscription filters. Edge Functions are written in TypeScript and Deno, with CORS, error responses and secrets kept in environment variables.

Storage and framework integration get their own sections. For Next.js the skill points at `@supabase/ssr` and middleware for protected routes; for SvelteKit, at `@supabase/auth-helpers-sveltekit` and hooks. Performance advice comes down to connection pooling, caching, indexes and pagination. One thing to know up front: the skill assumes your project already runs on Supabase and won't walk you through standing the service up.

## Requirements
- Works with: Supabase

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Mindrally/skills --skill supabase-development -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/supabase-development/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/supabase-development/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Mindrally/skills --skill supabase-development -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/supabase-development/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Mindrally/skills --skill supabase-development -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/supabase-development/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install Mindrally/skills supabase-development
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/supabase-development/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Mindrally/skills --skill supabase-development -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/Mindrally/skills --path supabase-development
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/supabase-development/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Mindrally/skills --skill supabase-development -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/Mindrally/skills/tree/HEAD/supabase-development/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- design a schema with foreign keys and indexes
- write RLS policies for reads and writes
- wire up OAuth and handle auth state changes
- subscribe to table changes over realtime
- move logic into an Edge Function with CORS and secrets

## Example prompts
- enable RLS on the profiles table and write SELECT and UPDATE policies
- add a realtime subscription to the messages table in the chat component
- set up Google auth in Next.js with @supabase/ssr

# Supabase Development

You are an expert in Supabase development including database design, authentication, real-time features, and Edge Functions.

## Core Principles

- Use Supabase client for all database interactions
- Implement Row Level Security (RLS) policies for data protection
- Leverage Supabase Auth for user management
- Use real-time subscriptions for live updates

## Database Design

### Schema Best Practices
- Use proper PostgreSQL types and constraints
- Implement foreign key relationships
- Create indexes for frequently queried columns
- Use views for complex queries
- Implement soft deletes where appropriate

### Row Level Security
- Always enable RLS on tables with user data
- Write policies for SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE
- Test policies thoroughly before deployment
- Use service role only for admin operations

## Authentication

- Implement OAuth providers (Google, GitHub, etc.)
- Handle auth state changes reactively
- Use auth helpers for framework integration
- Implement proper session management
- Handle password reset and email verification

## Real-Time Features

- Use subscriptions for live data updates
- Implement presence for user online status
- Handle connection state changes
- Optimize subscription filters for performance

## Edge Functions

- Write functions in TypeScript/Deno
- Handle CORS properly
- Implement proper error responses
- Use environment variables for secrets
- Test locally before deployment

## Storage

- Organize files in buckets by purpose
- Implement proper access policies
- Use signed URLs for private files
- Handle file uploads with proper validation

## Integration Patterns

### Next.js
- Use `@supabase/ssr` for server-side auth
- Implement middleware for protected routes
- Handle auth in Server Components

### SvelteKit
- Use `@supabase/auth-helpers-sveltekit`
- Implement hooks for auth handling
- Use load functions for data fetching

## Performance

- Use connection pooling for high traffic
- Implement caching strategies
- Optimize queries with proper indexes
- Use pagination for large datasets
