# suggesting-skills

A skill that watches what you're doing and suggests installing another skill when one already covers the task. Useful when you don't know the set yet.

## What it does

You can't invoke this one yourself — it's marked `user-invocable: false`. It waits for the moment you ask for something another skill already handles, then names it. Ask about Sentry and you'll hear about `adding-error-tracking`. It also spots gaps: no tests, no CI, and it'll mention `writing-tests` or `setting-up-ci`.

The core is a lookup table of task to skill. Analytics, auth, Stripe payments, Docker, code review, security audit, React Native, LLM prompts, database design. Alongside that sit a few rules: one suggestion per conversation, only when the timing fits, and no repeats after you decline.

For Cursor the install is a file copy into `.cursor/skills/suggesting-skills/SKILL.md`; other platforms have their own commands. The skill has nothing to offer if the skills it points at aren't in your project.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add spencerpauly/awesome-cursor-skills --skill suggesting-skills -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/suggesting-skills/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/suggesting-skills/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add spencerpauly/awesome-cursor-skills --skill suggesting-skills -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/suggesting-skills/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add spencerpauly/awesome-cursor-skills --skill suggesting-skills -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/suggesting-skills/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install spencerpauly/awesome-cursor-skills suggesting-skills
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/suggesting-skills/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add spencerpauly/awesome-cursor-skills --skill suggesting-skills -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/spencerpauly/awesome-cursor-skills --path resources/suggesting-skills
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/suggesting-skills/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add spencerpauly/awesome-cursor-skills --skill suggesting-skills -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- get pointed to a skill while doing by hand what it automates
- spot a gap like missing tests or CI
- find the right skill in the set for the task at hand
- hear about a skill at a natural moment, not mid-task

## Example prompts
- how do I add Sentry to this project?
- we have no CI set up, help me configure it
- write tests for this module from scratch

# Suggesting Skills

Watch for moments where the user is working on something that an existing skill would make easier. Suggest it when the timing is natural.

## Triggers

Suggest a skill when:
- The user asks how to do something a skill covers (e.g. "how do I add Sentry?" → `adding-error-tracking`)
- The user is struggling with a task and a skill has a proven workflow for it
- You notice the project is missing something a skill could set up (e.g. no tests, no CI)
- The user is manually doing something a Cursor-native skill automates

## How to Suggest

Keep it brief and contextual:

```
There's a skill for that — `adding-error-tracking` handles Sentry
setup with source maps and performance monitoring. Want me to use it?
```

Or when you notice a gap:

```
This project doesn't have CI set up. The `setting-up-ci` skill can
scaffold a GitHub Actions pipeline with lint, test, and build steps.
Want me to set that up?
```

## Skill Reference

| User is doing... | Suggest... |
|-----------------|------------|
| Adding analytics | `adding-analytics` |
| Setting up auth | `adding-auth` |
| Adding payments | `adding-stripe` |
| Writing tests from scratch | `writing-tests`, `adding-e2e-tests` |
| Debugging a hard bug | `systematic-debugging` |
| Creating a PR | `creating-pr` |
| Dockerizing | `adding-docker` |
| Setting up CI | `setting-up-ci` |
| Reviewing code quality | `reviewing-code` |
| Checking security | `auditing-security` |
| Building a mobile app | `react-native-patterns` |
| Working with LLM prompts | `prompt-engineering` |
| Designing a database | `database-design` |

## Rules

- Don't spam skill suggestions — one per conversation unless asked
- Only suggest when the timing is natural (user is about to do the thing, not mid-task)
- If the user declines, don't suggest the same skill again
- Mention how to install: copy the `SKILL.md` to `.cursor/skills/<name>/SKILL.md`
