# suede-churn-prevention

A retention playbook for diagnosing subscriber loss and building bounded interventions: honest cancel flows, reason-matched save offers, payment recovery and win-back design. Use it when churn needs a structured fix.

## What it does

The skill splits churn into two kinds. Voluntary churn, where the customer decides to leave, gets cancel flows, save offers and exit surveys. Involuntary churn, where a payment fails, gets dunning emails, smart retries and card updaters. Three modes are supported: build a cancel flow from scratch, improve an existing one, or set up failed payment recovery.

A cancel flow follows one path: trigger, survey, dynamic offer, confirmation, post-cancel. The survey is a single question with 5–8 options. The offer then matches the answer: a 20–30% discount for 2–3 months when price is the issue, a 1–3 month pause when usage is low, a downgrade instead of a full exit. An offer that misses the reason will not save the subscriber.

The skill does not write lifecycle emails, pricing architecture, paywalls or event instrumentation — those live in separate suede skills. Before asking questions it checks for product context in `.agents/product-marketing.md` or `.claude/product-marketing.md`. Cancellation law was checked as of October 2026, covering California's AB 2863 and the Eighth Circuit ruling on click-to-cancel.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add JasonColapietro/suede-creator-skills --skill suede-churn-prevention -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/suede-churn-prevention/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/suede-churn-prevention/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add JasonColapietro/suede-creator-skills --skill suede-churn-prevention -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/suede-churn-prevention/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add JasonColapietro/suede-creator-skills --skill suede-churn-prevention -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/suede-churn-prevention/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install JasonColapietro/suede-creator-skills suede-churn-prevention
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/suede-churn-prevention/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add JasonColapietro/suede-creator-skills --skill suede-churn-prevention -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/JasonColapietro/suede-creator-skills --path skills/suede-churn-prevention
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/suede-churn-prevention/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add JasonColapietro/suede-creator-skills --skill suede-churn-prevention -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/JasonColapietro/suede-creator-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/suede-churn-prevention/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- design a cancel flow with survey and dynamic save offers
- match a save offer to the cancellation reason
- set up dunning emails and retries for failed payments
- build health scores and proactive churn signals
- design a win-back sequence after cancellation

## Example prompts
- Design a cancel flow for our subscription product with a survey and dynamic offers
- Map our churn reasons to save offers
- Set up a dunning sequence for failed Stripe payments

# Suede AI Churn Prevention

Use this retention playbook to reduce voluntary and involuntary churn through transparent cancel flows, bounded save offers, proactive signals, and payment recovery.

## Before Starting

**Check for product marketing context first:**
If `.agents/product-marketing.md` exists (or `.claude/product-marketing.md`, or the legacy `product-marketing-context.md` filename, in older setups), read it before asking questions. Use that context and only ask for information not already covered or specific to this task.

Gather this context (ask if not provided):

### 1. Current Churn Situation
- What's your monthly churn rate? (Voluntary vs. involuntary if known)
- How many active subscribers?
- What's the average MRR per customer?
- Do you have a cancel flow today, or does cancel happen instantly?

### 2. Billing & Platform
- What billing provider? (Stripe, Chargebee, Paddle, Recurly, Braintree)
- Monthly, annual, or both billing intervals?
- Do you support plan pausing or downgrades?
- Any existing retention tooling? (Churnkey, ProsperStack, Raaft)

### 3. Product & Usage Data
- Do you track feature usage per user?
- Can you identify engagement drop-offs?
- Do you have cancellation reason data from past churns?
- What's your activation metric? (What do retained users do that churned users don't?)

### 4. Constraints
- B2B or B2C? (Affects flow design)
- Which states and countries are customers in? (California and other automatic
  renewal laws require online cancellation; see Cancellation law below)
- Brand tone for offboarding? (Empathetic, direct, playful)
