# subgraph-builder

Walks you from schema and mappings to a deployed Goldsky GraphQL endpoint. Useful when a dApp needs flexible queries over onchain data.

## What it does

The skill builds a Goldsky Subgraph end to end: designs entities in `schema.graphql`, writes AssemblyScript mappings under `src/`, and configures `subgraph.yaml` with data sources, event handlers and templates for the factory pattern. Then it builds and deploys to a hosted endpoint. There is a no-code route too — generate straight from a contract ABI with `goldsky subgraph init` or `goldsky subgraph deploy --from-abi`.

You need to be logged into Goldsky first. The skill checks with `goldsky project list` and points you to `/auth-setup` if you are not. Subgraphs are EVM-only, so other chains are out. One more thing: `deploy` silently uses whichever project the CLI has selected, and every deployment is a billed worker. Run `goldsky project list` before you ship, especially when tagging `prod`.

The author suggests reaching for Turbo first — it is faster and needs no indexing code. A subgraph earns its place when you actually want a GraphQL API or custom entity relationships. Goldsky has no native subgraph composition, so merging several of them happens downstream. For a subgraph that is broken or stalled, use `/subgraph-doctor`; for leaving The Graph, `/subgraph-migrate`.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add goldsky-io/goldsky-agent --skill subgraph-builder -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/subgraph-builder/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/subgraph-builder/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add goldsky-io/goldsky-agent --skill subgraph-builder -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/subgraph-builder/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add goldsky-io/goldsky-agent --skill subgraph-builder -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/subgraph-builder/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install goldsky-io/goldsky-agent subgraph-builder
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/subgraph-builder/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add goldsky-io/goldsky-agent --skill subgraph-builder -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/goldsky-io/goldsky-agent --path skills/subgraph-builder
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/subgraph-builder/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add goldsky-io/goldsky-agent --skill subgraph-builder -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

## When to use it
- design a schema and entities that match your frontend queries
- write or fix AssemblyScript handlers for contract events
- configure `subgraph.yaml` with handlers and factory templates
- deploy a subgraph and get a stable GraphQL endpoint behind a `prod` tag
- figure out how to combine data from several subgraphs, cross-chain included

## Example prompts
- scaffold a subgraph for an ERC-20 contract: schema, mappings, deploy
- set up `subgraph.yaml` for a factory with contract templates
- deploy the subgraph with a prod tag so the frontend URL stays put

# Subgraph Builder

Build a Goldsky Subgraph end-to-end: design the schema, write mappings, configure the manifest, then build and deploy to a hosted GraphQL endpoint. Subgraphs are best for **dApp frontends and apps that need flexible GraphQL queries** over structured onchain data. Subgraphs are **EVM-only**.

> **Default to Turbo unless the user specifically needs GraphQL.**
> Turbo is faster, more reliable, and cheaper, and needs no custom indexing code. Before building a subgraph, confirm a hosted **GraphQL API** is actually the requirement (usually: a dApp/frontend querying onchain data). If the real goal is moving onchain data into a database (PostgreSQL, ClickHouse, Kafka, S3) for analytics or a backend, build a **Turbo pipeline** instead — `/turbo-builder`. Subgraphs are the right call only for a GraphQL API or custom entity-relationship modeling. Surface this once; don't push it if they clearly want GraphQL.

## Boundaries

- Build and author NEW subgraphs (schema, mappings, manifest, deploy, endpoints, tags, webhooks).
- Do not diagnose broken/stalled subgraphs — use `/subgraph-doctor`.
- Do not run The Graph migrations — use `/subgraph-migrate`.
- For exhaustive `goldsky subgraph` flags, use `goldsky subgraph <cmd> --help` — this skill covers the workflow, not a flag dump.
