# subagent-creator

Walks you through writing a subagent: frontmatter, prompt, steps and a report format. Useful when a task needs its own context window.

## What it does

The skill covers building a subagent: a markdown file with frontmatter and a prompt that the parent agent hands work to. It goes field by field — `name` in kebab-case, `description`, `model` set to `inherit` or `fast`, and a `readonly` flag that blocks writes.

\`description` carries the most weight, because automatic delegation hinges on it. The skill lists phrasings that pull the trigger and four worked templates: verifier, debugger, security auditor, code reviewer. Each template fixes the steps to run on invocation plus the shape of the report, including how to sort findings by severity.

A checklist closes it out: one clear responsibility, a short prompt, a defined output. It suggests starting with 2-3 subagents rather than a shelf of them. Finished files go to `.agent/subagents/[name].md`. Cursor-specific subagents are out of scope; the skill points to `cursor-subagent-creator` for those.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add tech-leads-club/agent-skills --skill subagent-creator -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/subagent-creator/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/subagent-creator/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add tech-leads-club/agent-skills --skill subagent-creator -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/subagent-creator/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add tech-leads-club/agent-skills --skill subagent-creator -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/subagent-creator/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install tech-leads-club/agent-skills subagent-creator
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/subagent-creator/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add tech-leads-club/agent-skills --skill subagent-creator -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/tech-leads-club/agent-skills --path 'packages/skills-catalog/skills/(creation)/subagent-creator'
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/subagent-creator/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add tech-leads-club/agent-skills --skill subagent-creator -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/tech-leads-club/agent-skills/tree/HEAD/packages/skills-catalog/skills/(creation)/subagent-creator/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- define a subagent with its own context window for a specific job
- tune `description` so the agent delegates without being asked
- build a verifier that re-checks work already marked done
- turn a code audit into numbered steps and a severity report
- lock a subagent down to read-only with `readonly`

## Example prompts
- Use the subagent-creator skill: write me a verifier subagent that checks the finished code actually runs and reports back briefly.
- Add a debugger agent — it should take a failing test, isolate the cause and propose the smallest fix.
- Rewrite the `description` on my security subagent so it fires on auth and sensitive data work.

description: Guide for creating AI subagents with isolated context for complex multi-step workflows. Use when users want to create a subagent, specialized agent, verifier, debugger, or orchestrator that requires isolated context and deep specialization. Works with any agent that supports subagent delegation. Triggers on "create subagent", "new agent", "specialized assistant", "create verifier". Do NOT use for Cursor-specific subagents (use cursor-subagent-creator instead).

# Subagent Creator

This skill provides guidance for creating effective, agent-agnostic subagents.

## What are Subagents?

Subagents are specialized assistants that an AI agent can delegate tasks to. Characteristics:

- **Isolated context**: Each subagent has its own context window
- **Parallel execution**: Multiple subagents can run simultaneously
- **Specialization**: Configured with specific prompts and expertise
- **Reusable**: Defined once, used in multiple contexts

### When to Use Subagents vs Skills

```
Is the task complex with multiple steps?
├─ YES → Does it require isolated context?
│         ├─ YES → Use SUBAGENT
│         └─ NO → Use SKILL
│
└─ NO → Use SKILL
```

**Use Subagents for:**

- Complex workflows requiring isolated context
- Long-running tasks that benefit from specialization
- Verification and auditing (independent perspective)
- Parallel workstreams

**Use Skills for:**

- Quick, one-off actions
- Domain knowledge without context isolation
- Reusable procedures that don't need isolation

## Subagent Structure

A subagent is typically a markdown file with frontmatter metadata:

```markdown
---
name: agent-name
description: Description of when to use this subagent.
model: inherit # or fast, or specific model ID
readonly: false # true to restrict write permissions
---
You are an [expert in X].
When invoked:
1. [Step 1]
2. [Step 2]
3. [Step 3]
[Detailed instructions about expected behavior]
Report [type of expected result]:
- [Output format]
- [Metrics or specific information]
```

## Subagent Creation Process

### 1. Define the Purpose

- What specific responsibility does the subagent have?
- Why does it need isolated context?
- Does it involve multiple complex steps?
- Does it require deep specialization?

### 2. Configure the Metadata

#### name (required)

Unique identifier. Use kebab-case.

```yaml
name: security-auditor
```

#### description (critical)
````
