## What it does

This skill lays out a workflow for turning LLM responses into structured data. You define a schema, select a response method, call the model, validate the result, then handle failures with a retry or fallback. The material covers JSON Mode, Structured Outputs, function calling, and tool use.

The examples use TypeScript with `openai` and `zod`. They show contact extraction, named-entity extraction, intent classification, and field validation with Zod schemas. The code is built around OpenAI models and API patterns, so that is the integration to account for before adapting it elsewhere.

The skill is listed for Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Gemini CLI, and OpenCode. In Claude Code, installation places the skill at `~/.claude/skills/structured-output-extractor/SKILL.md`.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add patricio0312rev/skills --skill structured-output-extractor -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/structured-output-extractor/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/structured-output-extractor/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add patricio0312rev/skills --skill structured-output-extractor -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/structured-output-extractor/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add patricio0312rev/skills --skill structured-output-extractor -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/structured-output-extractor/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install patricio0312rev/skills structured-output-extractor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/structured-output-extractor/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add patricio0312rev/skills --skill structured-output-extractor -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/patricio0312rev/skills --path ai-engineering/structured-output-extractor
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/structured-output-extractor/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add patricio0312rev/skills --skill structured-output-extractor -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

## When to use it
- extract contact fields as JSON
- define typed output for an LLM call
- validate generated data with Zod
- route model arguments through function calling
- classify a message into a fixed schema

## Example prompts
- Extract contact details from this text and return name, email, phone, and company as structured data.
- Create a Zod schema for a product review and validate the model response.
- Set up function calling to extract people, organizations, locations, and dates.

# Structured Output Extractor

Extract reliable, typed data from LLM responses.

## Core Workflow

1. **Define schema**: Create data structure
2. **Choose method**: Function calling vs prompting
3. **Generate response**: Call LLM with structure
4. **Validate output**: Parse and verify
5. **Handle errors**: Retry or fallback

## Methods Comparison

| Method | Reliability | Flexibility | Best For |
|--------|-------------|-------------|----------|
| OpenAI JSON Mode | High | Medium | Simple JSON |
| Function Calling | Very High | High | Complex schemas |
| Instructor | Very High | High | Python/TS apps |
| Zod + Prompting | Medium | High | Custom parsing |

## OpenAI Structured Outputs

### JSON Mode

```typescript
// extractors/json-mode.ts
import OpenAI from 'openai';
const openai = new OpenAI();
interface ExtractedData {
  name: string;
  email: string;
  phone?: string;
  company?: string;
}
export async function extractContactInfo(text: string): Promise<ExtractedData> {
  const response = await openai.chat.completions.create({
    model: 'gpt-4-turbo-preview',
    response_format: { type: 'json_object' },
    messages: [
      {
        role: 'system',
        content: `Extract contact information from text. Return JSON with:
{
  "name": "string",
  "email": "string",
  "phone": "string or null",
  "company": "string or null"
}`,
      },
      { role: 'user', content: text },
    ],
  });
  return JSON.parse(response.choices[0].message.content!);
}
```

### Structured Outputs (Beta)

```typescript
// extractors/structured.ts
import OpenAI from 'openai';
import { z } from 'zod';
import { zodResponseFormat } from 'openai/helpers/zod';
const ContactSchema = z.object({
  name: z.string().describe('Full name of the contact'),
  email: z.string().email().describe('Email address'),
  phone: z.string().nullable().describe('Phone number if available'),
  company: z.string().nullable().describe('Company name if mentioned'),
  role: z.string().nullable().describe('Job title or role'),
});
type Contact = z.infer<typeof ContactSchema>;
export async function extractContact(text: string): Promise<Contact> {
  const response = await openai.beta.chat.completions.parse({
    model: 'gpt-4o-2024-08-06',
    messages: [
      {
        role: 'system',
        content: 'Extract contact information from the provided text.',
      },
      { role: 'user', content: text },
    ],
