# stripe-webhooks

A skill for Stripe webhook work: signature verification, event parsing and ready handler examples. Useful when payment events fail verification.

## What it does

The skill covers the boring parts of Stripe webhooks: wiring handlers, reading event types, and debugging signature checks. It leans on the official SDK helpers for Node and Python, which verify the `Stripe-Signature` header (HMAC-SHA256 over `timestamp.body`) and hand back a parsed event in one call.

The raw body is where most setups break. Pass the Buffer or string straight through — a `JSON.parse` before verification makes the check fail. The helpers throw a signature verification error on tampering or a stale timestamp. You need `STRIPE_SECRET_KEY` and `STRIPE_WEBHOOK_SECRET` in the environment.

The repo ships complete handlers with route wiring and tests for Express, Next.js and FastAPI, plus references on dashboard setup and verification details. For local work the skill suggests a tunnel: `npx hookdeck-cli listen 3000 stripe --path /webhooks/stripe`.

## Requirements
- Works with: Stripe

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add hookdeck/webhook-skills --skill stripe-webhooks -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/stripe-webhooks/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/stripe-webhooks/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add hookdeck/webhook-skills --skill stripe-webhooks -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/stripe-webhooks/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add hookdeck/webhook-skills --skill stripe-webhooks -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/stripe-webhooks/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install hookdeck/webhook-skills stripe-webhooks
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/stripe-webhooks/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add hookdeck/webhook-skills --skill stripe-webhooks -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/hookdeck/webhook-skills --path skills/stripe-webhooks
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/stripe-webhooks/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add hookdeck/webhook-skills --skill stripe-webhooks -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**

## When to use it
- verify an incoming Stripe webhook signature
- parse a `payment_intent.succeeded` event without losing the raw body
- fix a failing `Stripe-Signature` check
- build a handler for `customer.subscription.created`
- run a local tunnel for webhook testing

## Example prompts
- Set up a Stripe webhook handler in Express with signature verification
- Why does constructEvent fail — check that the body is raw
- Add invoice.paid handling to my FastAPI app

# Stripe Webhooks

## When to Use This Skill

- Setting up Stripe webhook handlers
- Debugging signature verification failures
- Understanding Stripe event types and payloads
- Handling payment, subscription, or invoice events

## Verification (core)

Stripe ships official SDK helpers that verify the `Stripe-Signature` header (HMAC-SHA256 over `timestamp.body`) and parse the event in one call. Pass the **raw** request body — don't `JSON.parse` first.

Node:

```javascript
const stripe = require('stripe')(process.env.STRIPE_SECRET_KEY);
const event = stripe.webhooks.constructEvent(
  rawBody,                                  // Buffer or string of the raw HTTP body
  req.headers['stripe-signature'],
  process.env.STRIPE_WEBHOOK_SECRET         // whsec_… from the webhook endpoint settings
);
// Throws Stripe.errors.SignatureVerificationError on tampering or stale timestamp
```

Python:

```python
import stripe
event = stripe.Webhook.construct_event(
    raw_body,                                 # bytes of the raw HTTP body
    request.headers["stripe-signature"],
    os.environ["STRIPE_WEBHOOK_SECRET"],
)
# Raises stripe.error.SignatureVerificationError on tampering or stale timestamp
```

## Common Event Types

| Event | Description |
|-------|-------------|
| `payment_intent.succeeded` | Payment completed successfully |
| `payment_intent.payment_failed` | Payment failed |
| `customer.subscription.created` | New subscription started |
| `customer.subscription.deleted` | Subscription canceled |
| `invoice.paid` | Invoice payment successful |
| `checkout.session.completed` | Checkout session finished |

> **For full event reference**, see [Stripe Webhook Events](https://docs.stripe.com/api/events/types)

## Environment Variables

```bash
STRIPE_SECRET_KEY=sk_test_xxxxx      # From Stripe dashboard
STRIPE_WEBHOOK_SECRET=whsec_xxxxx    # From webhook endpoint settings
```

## Local Development

```bash
# Start tunnel (no account needed)
npx hookdeck-cli listen 3000 stripe --path /webhooks/stripe
```
