## What it does

This skill covers `assistant-stream`, the wire layer under assistant-ui chat runtimes. It normalizes any backend into one stream of `AssistantStreamChunk` values, ships encoders and decoders for three wire formats, and adds a resumable-stream layer on top of any of them. If your backend already speaks the Vercel AI SDK, you rarely touch the package: `streamText` plus `toUIMessageStream` is enough. Reach for it when you write a custom endpoint, decode a stream yourself, or want resumable streams.

Inside are references for the Data Stream and Assistant Transport formats, an encoder and decoder catalog, and the `assistant-stream/resumable` layer with in-memory, Redis and ioredis stores. Server-side streams are written through `AssistantStreamController`: `appendText`, `appendReasoning`, `appendSource`, `appendFile`, `appendData`, `addToolCallPart`, `merge`, `close`. `createAssistantStreamResponse` runs a callback with the controller and returns a `Response` encoded as Data Stream. An uncaught throw inside the callback becomes an `error` chunk.

Worth installing if you are moving off the Vercel AI SDK or hitting wire-level symptoms: an unexpected `part-start` or `text-delta` shape, a tool call that never settles, a part that silently drops, a `Content-Type` mismatch, a reload that cannot resume a response. For runtime hooks use the `runtime` skill; for cloud persistence use `cloud`.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add assistant-ui/skills --skill streaming -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/streaming/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/streaming/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add assistant-ui/skills --skill streaming -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/streaming/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add assistant-ui/skills --skill streaming -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/streaming/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install assistant-ui/skills streaming
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/streaming/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add assistant-ui/skills --skill streaming -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/assistant-ui/skills --path assistant-ui/skills/streaming
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/streaming/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add assistant-ui/skills --skill streaming -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/assistant-ui/skills/tree/HEAD/assistant-ui/skills/streaming/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- build a custom streaming endpoint outside the Vercel AI SDK
- choose between the Data Stream and Assistant Transport protocols
- decode a response with `AssistantStream.fromResponse`
- wire resumable streams through Redis or ioredis
- debug a tool call that never settles or a part that drops

## Example prompts
- Help me build a custom streaming endpoint with `createAssistantStreamResponse`
- Which protocol should I use, Data Stream or Assistant Transport?
- Set up a resumable stream via `assistant-stream/resumable`
