# streaming-ssr

Teaches the agent to flush HTML in chunks with renderToPipeableStream and Suspense. Useful when a large page can't wait for the full tree before the first byte.

## What it does

The skill walks through moving off `renderToString` and onto a stream. Instead of building one long HTML string, the server sends the shell first and pushes slower sections as they finish. The browser starts parsing and painting right away, so TTFB stops scaling with page size.

It covers the React 18 APIs: `renderToPipeableStream` on Node, `renderToReadableStream` on Web Streams, the `onShellReady` and `onError` callbacks, `Suspense` boundaries, and `hydrateRoot()` on the client. A sample HTML shell and an Express handler that pipes the stream into `response` are included.

Swapping `renderToString` for `renderToPipeableStream` is not a find-and-replace job. Code that builds a template with `renderToStaticMarkup` and injects a `renderToString` result into it expects a string, and a stream won't fit there. Streaming also buys you nothing if your host or reverse proxy buffers the whole response — the server flushes chunks, the browser gets one blob. Worth checking your stack before rewriting the render path.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PatternsDev/skills --skill streaming-ssr -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/streaming-ssr/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/streaming-ssr/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PatternsDev/skills --skill streaming-ssr -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/streaming-ssr/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PatternsDev/skills --skill streaming-ssr -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/streaming-ssr/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install PatternsDev/skills streaming-ssr
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/streaming-ssr/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PatternsDev/skills --skill streaming-ssr -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/PatternsDev/skills --path react/streaming-ssr
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/streaming-ssr/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PatternsDev/skills --skill streaming-ssr -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- cut Time to First Byte on large pages
- start painting before the whole component tree resolves
- stream slow sections behind `Suspense` boundaries
- move an Express handler to chunked HTML delivery
- keep memory flat when the network is congested

## Example prompts
- Convert this page's render path to streaming SSR with `renderToPipeableStream`
- Wrap the slow section in `Suspense` so it streams after the shell
- Check whether our proxy buffers the response, otherwise streaming won't help

# Streaming Server-Side Rendering

We can reduce the Time To Interactive while still server rendering our application by _streaming_ the contents of our application. Instead of generating one large HTML string containing the necessary markup for the current navigation, we can send the shell first and stream slower parts later. The moment the client receives the first chunks of HTML, it can start parsing and painting the page.

Modern React streaming uses `renderToPipeableStream()` on Node runtimes or `renderToReadableStream()` on Web Stream runtimes, then hydrates the response with `hydrateRoot()` on the client.

## When to Use

- Use this when you want to improve TTFB and FCP by sending HTML incrementally as it's generated
- This is helpful for large pages where waiting for the full HTML would delay the initial paint

## When NOT to Use

- When your hosting environment doesn't support streaming responses (some serverless platforms buffer the full response)
- For simple static pages where the HTML is small enough that streaming provides no meaningful improvement
- When middleware or reverse proxies in your stack buffer the response, negating the streaming benefit

## Instructions

- Use `renderToPipeableStream` (React 18+) instead of the deprecated `renderToNodeStream`
- Combine streaming with `Suspense` boundaries to stream partial content while slow parts load
- Use the `onShellReady` callback to begin streaming once the critical shell is ready
- Handle streaming errors with the `onError` callback

## Details

The initial HTML gets sent to the response object alongside the chunks of data from the App component:

```html
<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
  <head>
    <title>Cat Facts</title>
    <link rel="stylesheet" href="/style.css" />
    <script type="module" defer src="/build/client.js"></script>
  </head>
  <body>
    <h1>Stream Rendered Cat Facts!</h1>
    <div id="approot"></div>
  </body>
</html>
```

Modern React streaming on Node uses `renderToPipeableStream`:

```js
import { renderToPipeableStream } from "react-dom/server";
app.use("*", (request, response) => {
  let didError = false;
  const { pipe } = renderToPipeableStream(<App />, {
    bootstrapScripts: ["/build/client.js"],
    onShellReady() {
      response.statusCode = didError ? 500 : 200;
      response.setHeader("Content-Type", "text/html");
      pipe(response);
````
