# strategy-framework

Gives you one template for writing a trading strategy down: entry and exit rules, position sizing, risk limits, performance criteria. Useful when the idea exists but the document does not.

## What it does

The skill defines a document structure that covers a strategy end to end: identity, an edge hypothesis, entry and exit rules, position sizing, risk parameters, filters and performance criteria. The full copy-paste template sits in `references/strategy_template.md`, and strategy types are described in `references/strategy_types.md`. Entry rules and filters are written as Python functions over pandas frames, with conditions joined by AND logic.

It also lays out a lifecycle: hypothesis, definition, backtest, paper trade, small live, scale, monitor, retire. For backtesting it names `vectorbt`, asks for at least 100 trades and walk-forward validation split 70/30. Paper trading is advised to run for 2 weeks or 30 trades, whichever is longer, and a gap of more than 25% against backtest results is a reason to investigate before going live.

The skill leans on its neighbours: sizing lives in `position-sizing`, portfolio guardrails in `risk-management`, slippage and fees in `slippage-modeling`. Without them you still get a filled-in form and little else. Worth installing if you already trade an algorithm or plan to, because the discipline here rests on written rules rather than memory.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add agiprolabs/claude-trading-skills --skill strategy-framework -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/strategy-framework/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/strategy-framework/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add agiprolabs/claude-trading-skills --skill strategy-framework -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/strategy-framework/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add agiprolabs/claude-trading-skills --skill strategy-framework -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/strategy-framework/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install agiprolabs/claude-trading-skills strategy-framework
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/strategy-framework/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add agiprolabs/claude-trading-skills --skill strategy-framework -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/agiprolabs/claude-trading-skills --path skills/strategy-framework
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/strategy-framework/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add agiprolabs/claude-trading-skills --skill strategy-framework -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/agiprolabs/claude-trading-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/strategy-framework/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- write entry and exit rules that code can actually test
- set position size and risk limits before the first trade
- run a backtest with walk-forward validation and fees included
- compare paper trading results against backtest expectations
- decide when a strategy should be retired

## Example prompts
- Write out my trading strategy using the strategy-framework template: hypothesis, entries, exits, risk limits
- Check my strategy against the strategy-framework criteria before I trade it live
- Lay out the lifecycle plan for this strategy: backtest, paper trade, small live, scale

# Strategy Framework

A standardized system for defining, documenting, testing, and managing trading strategies. This skill provides templates and tools that enforce discipline, enable reproducibility, and make strategies testable.

## Why a Strategy Framework Matters

Trading without a written strategy framework leads to:
- **Inconsistency**: ad-hoc decisions driven by emotion rather than rules
- **Untestability**: vague ideas that cannot be backtested or evaluated
- **Scope creep**: strategies that drift without version-controlled definitions
- **Unmanaged risk**: missing stop losses, position limits, or drawdown halts

A strategy framework forces you to:
1. State a falsifiable hypothesis about a market inefficiency
2. Define precise, machine-testable entry and exit rules
3. Specify position sizing and risk parameters before trading
4. Set minimum performance criteria for continuation or retirement
5. Track changes through versioned strategy documents

## Strategy Definition Template

Every strategy must be documented using the standard template. The full copy-paste template is in `references/strategy_template.md`.

### Core Sections

**Identity**
```
Name: SOL-EMA-Cross v1.0
Asset class: Solana tokens (top 50 by 24h volume)
Timeframe: Primary 1H, confirmation 4H
Style: Trend following
```

**Edge Hypothesis**: State what market inefficiency you are exploiting and why it exists.

```
Hypothesis: Solana mid-cap tokens exhibit momentum persistence
on the 1H timeframe due to retail herding behavior and low
institutional participation. EMA crossovers capture the
initiation of these trends.
```

**Entry Rules**: Specific, testable conditions combined with AND/OR logic.

```python
def entry_signal(data: pd.DataFrame) -> bool:
    """All conditions must be True (AND logic)."""
    ema_cross = data["ema_12"] > data["ema_26"]  # EMA 12 crossed above 26
    ema_rising = data["ema_26"].diff(3) > 0       # 26 EMA trending up
    volume_ok = data["volume"] > data["vol_sma_20"] * 1.5  # Volume confirmation
