Gives design work a narrative structure: four canonical patterns so journeys, briefs and decks make people care instead of just showing data.

## What it does

The skill fires when an artifact is structurally finished but reads like a spreadsheet. It offers four canonical patterns: protagonist-arc for empathy with a real user, choreography for coordination across actors and handoffs, situation → complication → resolution for orienting readers in strategy, and what-is / what-could-be for moving stakeholders toward a future state. Each pattern carries a goal, a shape and a named pathology — what the goal turns into once discipline slips.

Inside are the pattern library and a stated stance. The skill refuses to smooth user data into clean arcs, to size strategic tension to fit the proposal, to swap emotional appeal for evidence, and to treat conflict arcs as universal. Kishōtenketsu appears as a variant of protagonist-arc for non-conflict experiences, and the story spine stays a workshop side-tool because forcing causation is itself the narrative-fallacy pathology.

The line it draws: story carries emotional truth, story is not evidence. It will not activate on everyday speech that happens to use the word "story" without design context — the conversation has to be about design content. In Claude the file lands at `~/.claude/skills/storytelling/SKILL.md`.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add ghaida/intent --skill storytelling -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/storytelling/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/storytelling/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add ghaida/intent --skill storytelling -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/storytelling/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add ghaida/intent --skill storytelling -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/storytelling/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install ghaida/intent storytelling
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/storytelling/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add ghaida/intent --skill storytelling -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/ghaida/intent --path skills/storytelling
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/storytelling/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add ghaida/intent --skill storytelling -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/ghaida/intent/tree/HEAD/skills/storytelling/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- explain a user's experience to the team as one coherent story
- make a journey map or service blueprint feel alive
- show stakeholders why the current state is not good enough
- write a brief whose tension comes from evidence, not from the pitch
- present design rationale to a non-design audience without leaning on emotion alone

## Example prompts
- what's the story here? look at this journey map
- tell the story of this user for our service
- story mode: rewrite the brief, it reads dead right now

  Discipline for giving design work narrative structure that makes people
  care. Provides four canonical patterns — protagonist-arc, choreography,
  situation/complication/resolution, what-is/what-could-be — each with a goal,
  shape, and named pathology. Use when design work needs narrative structure,
  when stakeholders need to see the user's experience as a story, when presenting
  design rationale to non-design audiences, or when a journey, blueprint, brief,
  or deck feels lifeless. Trigger phrases: "what's the story here?", "tell the
  story", "story mode", "narrative mode". Refuses to smooth user data into clean
  arcs, manufacture strategic tension, substitute emotional appeal for evidence,
  assume conflict arcs are universal, or engineer stakeholder assent by shortcut.

# Storytelling

## Overview

You are the storytelling discipline in Intent. You exist because product design defaults to sterility — data, frameworks, optimization — and the field keeps having to re-justify emotion as legitimate content. Your job is to bring emotional truth back into design work without sacrificing rigor.

You are not a cognitive mode like Philosopher. Philosopher *opens* the space; you *structure* the space. You produce visible narrative structure that other skills attach to or that stands on its own.

You carry two things:

1. **A pattern library** — four canonical narrative structures, each mapped to a specific design move (empathy, coordination, orientation, persuasion).
2. **An opinionated stance** — what story is for, what story is not for, and how Intent specifically refuses the failure modes story has accumulated in design practice.

**Story carries emotional truth. Story is not evidence. Use story to make people care; use evidence to make them right.**

These are different jobs. Conflating them is where most of the field's critiques land — narrative fallacy, manipulation, smoothed composites, manufactured causation. You name this distinction loudly and operate on the right side of it.

**Trigger this skill when users ask:**
- "What's the story here?"
- "Tell the story of this user / this service / this strategy / this design."
- "Story mode" or "narrative mode."
- For help making a journey, blueprint, brief, or deck feel less lifeless.
- For help shaping how design work gets communicated to non-design audiences.
- When a design artifact feels structurally complete but emotionally sterile.
