## What it does

The skill routes user stock queries to the `octagon-mcp` server using the `octagon-agent` tool. It resolves the equity ticker and fetches live data from `octagon-stock-data-agent`. The output details price changes, exchange venue, trading volume, day range, and market cap.

The skill will fail without a configured Octagon MCP server. Setup must happen beforehand. Ensure Octagon MCP is active in your agent configuration, such as Cursor, Claude Desktop, or Windsurf.

Beyond spot quotes, the skill provides technical indicators like 50-day and 200-day moving averages. These metrics clarify trend momentum and positions relative to 52-week boundaries.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add OctagonAI/skills --skill stock-quote -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/stock-quote/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/stock-quote/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add OctagonAI/skills --skill stock-quote -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/stock-quote/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add OctagonAI/skills --skill stock-quote -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/stock-quote/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install OctagonAI/skills stock-quote
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/stock-quote/SKILL.md`

```bash
npx skills add OctagonAI/skills --skill stock-quote -a opencode
```

# Stock Quote

Retrieve real-time stock quotes with current price, volume, day range, 52-week range, market cap, and moving averages using the Octagon MCP server.

## Prerequisites

Ensure Octagon MCP is configured in your AI agent (Cursor, Claude Desktop, Windsurf, etc.). See [references/mcp-setup.md](references/mcp-setup.md) for installation instructions.

## Workflow

### 1. Identify the Stock

Determine the ticker symbol for the stock you want to quote (e.g., AAPL, MSFT, GOOGL).

### 2. Execute Query via Octagon MCP

Use the `octagon-agent` tool with a natural language prompt:

```
Get real-time stock quote for the symbol <TICKER>.
```

**MCP Call Format:**

```json
{
  "server": "octagon-mcp",
  "toolName": "octagon-agent",
  "arguments": {
    "prompt": "Get real-time stock quote for the symbol AAPL."
  }
}
```

### 3. Expected Output

The agent returns a comprehensive quote including:

|--------|---------------|
| Current Price | $270.01 |
| Change | +$10.53 (+4.06%) |
| Volume | 72,890,096 shares |
