## What it does

The first 16 KB of this board's flash hold WeAct Studio's HID bootloader, not your code. Your application begins at `0x08004000`, and anything built as if it owned `0x08000000` jumps straight into the bootloader after a successful flash.

The skill hands the agent a hardware map: the LED on PC13, the KEY button on PA0 that needs a pull-up, a 25 MHz crystal, USB-C wired to USB_OTG_FS. It ships copy-paste recipes — a `platformio.ini`, a linker-script edit, a replacement `Reset_Handler` that masks interrupts and points VTOR at the app's vector table, a PLL tree for 84 MHz plus 48 MHz USB, and a CDC console that replaces UART printf. A working template project does blink and console output.

You still write a `SysTick_Handler()` calling `HAL_IncTick()`, because `framework-stm32cube` leaves a weak default that loops forever — the first `HAL_Delay()` then hangs, which looks identical to an unfixed VTOR. The `upload_protocol = hid` route fails too: it hunts for `1209:BEBA` while this bootloader answers as `0483:572A`. Flashing over ROM DFU or ST-Link wipes the bootloader, and restoring it from another board's dump triggers a full flash erase on the UID check.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add alexex1993/mcu-skills --skill stm32f401rc-blackpill -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/stm32f401rc-blackpill/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/stm32f401rc-blackpill/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add alexex1993/mcu-skills --skill stm32f401rc-blackpill -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/stm32f401rc-blackpill/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add alexex1993/mcu-skills --skill stm32f401rc-blackpill -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/stm32f401rc-blackpill/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install alexex1993/mcu-skills stm32f401rc-blackpill
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/stm32f401rc-blackpill/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add alexex1993/mcu-skills --skill stm32f401rc-blackpill -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/alexex1993/mcu-skills --path skills/stm32/stm32f401rc-blackpill
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/stm32f401rc-blackpill/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add alexex1993/mcu-skills --skill stm32f401rc-blackpill -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- set up a PlatformIO project for a board that keeps a bootloader in flash
- move the application to 0x08004000 so it boots
- get printf output over USB CDC with no COM port
- configure the PLL for 84 MHz and 48 MHz USB
- enter the bootloader or recover it after an erase

## Example prompts
- Set up platformio.ini for the STM32F401RCT6 behind the HID bootloader so the app links at `0x08004000`.
- The PC13 blink never starts and hangs in `HAL_Delay` — look at `Reset_Handler` and `SysTick_Handler`.
- Give me printf over USB CDC on this board, no external USB-UART adapter.

description: Firmware development for the 40-pin "Black Pill"-format board with an STM32F401RCT6 (STM32F401RC, LQFP64, 256 KB flash, 64 KB RAM, 84 MHz) that ships with the WeAct Studio HID Bootloader (USB 0483:572A, flash 0x08000000-0x08003FFF, app at 0x08004000) — its PC13 LED, KEY button on PA0, 25 MHz HSE, USB-C on USB_OTG_FS, and the PlatformIO + STM32Cube HAL setup around them, including a USB CDC virtual COM port for printf debugging. Use when working on this board, an unbranded F401RCT6 Black Pill clone, or any STM32F401/F411 board that enumerates as "WeAct Studio HID Bootloader": project setup, platformio.ini, linking at 0x08004000, flashing through the HID bootloader or ROM DFU, the app starting behind a bootloader (VTOR, SysTick, clock hand-off), clock/PLL configuration for 84 MHz plus 48 MHz USB, printf/serial console over USB (no /dev/cu or COM port), a blink that never starts or hangs in HAL_Delay, entering or recovering the bootloader, or debugging why something on the board does not work.

# STM32F401RCT6 "Black Pill" with the WeAct HID bootloader

Board-specific firmware knowledge. The board's defining feature is not the chip but what sits in the
first 16 KB of its flash: WeAct's HID bootloader. Almost every failure on this board comes from code
that assumes it owns 0x08000000 and a freshly reset chip — neither is true here. Read the reference
files rather than guessing.

- `reference/board-hardware.md` — the hardware (MCU, pins, header, clocks, memory map with the
  bootloader), a full description of the bootloader's behaviour and protocol, PlatformIO
  configuration, flashing and recovery routes, and a symptom → cause → fix table (§9).
- `reference/recipes.md` — copy-paste code taken from `template/`: `platformio.ini`, the linker-script
  change, the hand-off `Reset_Handler`, the 84/48 MHz clock tree, the USB CDC console, the flasher,
  bootloader reinstall.
- `template/` — a **working PlatformIO project**: blink + USB CDC `printf` console, flashed over USB
  through the HID bootloader without touching a button, plus a scaffold script that can also produce
  a bare blink. See `template/README.md`.
