# status-colors-and-errors

A skill that sets rules for semantic status colours and error copy: how many colours to keep, what each one means, and how to write a message with a way forward.

## What it does

The skill kicks in when you design status indicators, form validation, alerts or error states. It keeps the colour set small: red for errors, orange for warnings, green for success, blue for information. Each colour means exactly one thing across the product, and orange stays reserved for warnings. If two tokens render alike, the skill says to keep one: a second name for the same visible colour becomes a lie, because authors pick either and users read a single state.

A separate section covers errors. Every message should answer three questions: what went wrong, why, and what to do next. Transient failures such as network errors or timeouts need a retry action, validation errors should point at the field at fault. For the damaging cases the skill pushes prevention: confirm before an irreversible action, disable unavailable controls, autosave, optimistic UI with rollback. State the consequences before the user acts, not after.

Inside there is a severity table, from a full-page blocking error down to a toast and an empty state, plus a review checklist. The skill loads on paths like `**/*.css`, `**/*.tsx` and `tailwind.config.*`, so in a project with no CSS files or components it will not fire at all.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dembrandt/dembrandt-skills --skill status-colors-and-errors -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/status-colors-and-errors/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/status-colors-and-errors/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dembrandt/dembrandt-skills --skill status-colors-and-errors -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/status-colors-and-errors/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dembrandt/dembrandt-skills --skill status-colors-and-errors -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/status-colors-and-errors/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install dembrandt/dembrandt-skills status-colors-and-errors
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/status-colors-and-errors/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dembrandt/dembrandt-skills --skill status-colors-and-errors -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/dembrandt/dembrandt-skills --path skills/status-colors-and-errors
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/status-colors-and-errors/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dembrandt/dembrandt-skills --skill status-colors-and-errors -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/dembrandt/dembrandt-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/status-colors-and-errors/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- pick colours for errors, warnings and success without growing the palette
- write error copy that tells the user what to do next
- add a retry for a network failure or timeout
- confirm an irreversible action before it happens
- choose the severity level: inline error, toast or banner

## Example prompts
- what colours should I use for errors and warnings
- design the error state for this form
- how should I handle a failed API call so the user can retry

# Status Colours and Error Design

## Keep the Colour Set Small

Every status colour added to a system is a cognitive burden on the user. They must learn what each colour means, remember it, and interpret it correctly under stress — which is exactly when errors occur.

**The minimal set that covers almost everything:**

| Colour | Semantic meaning | Always means |
|---|---|---|
| **Red** | Error / failure / destructive | Something went wrong, or this action cannot be undone |
| **Orange / Amber** | Warning | Something needs attention before proceeding |
| **Green** | Success / positive | Action completed, state is healthy |
| **Blue** | Info / neutral status | Informational, no action required |

**Rule: each colour maps to exactly one meaning across the entire product.** If orange means "warning" in one component and "pending" in another, the system breaks down.

**Every status tone must be visibly distinct from the others.** If two tokens render alike, keep one. A second name for the same visible colour is not a second status: authors pick either, users read one state, and the name becomes a lie. Draft and pending states take neutral, not the warning tone.
