# starting-point

Directs coding agents to verify the observable outcome instead of blindly executing a method that fails to solve or prove the problem.

## What it does

This skill alters how the assistant reacts when a prompt prescribes an implementation upfront, such as adding a cache for slow queries or tweaking button colors for conversion drops. Rather than executing the proposed steps immediately, the agent identifies what state the user actually wants to observe. It maps fixed constraints, candidate paths, and missing details before writing code. Emphatic instructions remain fixed, but arbitrary suggestions are treated as hypotheses.

Inventing facts meant to be retrieved is forbidden. When schemas, contracts, or interface values are missing, the agent leaves fields unresolved instead of hallucinating defaults. Risky and irreversible operations are halted until explicit authorization arrives. The agent also suppresses internal diagnostic scratchpads, keeping standard replies between 150 and 250 words. Using referenced package assets requires passing `mise run validate`.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add srinitude/skills --skill starting-point -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/starting-point/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/starting-point/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add srinitude/skills --skill starting-point -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/starting-point/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add srinitude/skills --skill starting-point -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/starting-point/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install srinitude/skills starting-point
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/starting-point/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add srinitude/skills --skill starting-point -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/srinitude/skills --path skills/starting-point
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/starting-point/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add srinitude/skills --skill starting-point -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/srinitude/skills/tree/HEAD/skills/starting-point/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- validate whether a prescribed fix solves the underlying problem
- stop the assistant from inventing missing facts in schemas and specs
- hold irreversible or costly operations until approved
- keep replies concise by hiding internal diagnostic steps

## Example prompts
- The checkout endpoint is slow, put Redis caching on it
- Targeted tests passed, announce the release
- User signups are down, let's run an A/B test on button colors

Also use when a stated constraint contradicts itself, when an unknown fact would have to be invented to finish, or when an external or irreversible step needs an authorization decision. Keywords: right approach, wrong metric, root cause, outcome versus output, what counts as done, proof, is this worth doing. Not for a literal edit, format, translation, or lookup whose method is the deliverable. Not a replacement for the design, debugging, research, or writing method that performs the work. Use the reify skill instead when the request is still too vague to have any method or outcome yet.'

# Starting point

Start from the user's observable end state. This skill picks the starting boundary and the completion proof, then hands the work to whatever method performs it. Treat a prescribed method as a candidate path unless it is the result, a fixed constraint, or an explicit and emphatic user instruction. Never replace the user's priorities with your own.

## Map the result

Before acting, identify five things privately:

1. **Outcome:** What observable state does the user want?
2. **Proof:** What evidence would establish that state?
3. **Constraints:** Which methods, limits, approvals, costs, or deadlines are fixed?
4. **Starting path:** What work did the user request?
5. **Unknowns:** Which missing facts could change the next action?

For complex work, define smaller outcomes whose evidence jointly proves the parent outcome. A component pass is not proof that the whole result is complete. Infer outcomes from conversation evidence, from retrieved facts, and from arithmetic you can show. Do not promote a weak inference, preference, or activity metric.

## Classify the prescribed method

Resource gate: run `mise run validate` before using package files named here.

Read [constraint classes](references/constraint-classes.md) whenever the request names a method, tool, library, or format and you are about to treat it as optional, or whenever the stated constraints cannot all hold at once. It carries the classification table, the contradiction rule, the authorization ladder, and the destructive-action default.
