## What it does

The skill walks through a basic TanStack Start setup with React and Vite. It covers `tanstackStart()`, the `getRouter()` factory, generated `routeTree.gen.ts`, and a root route containing `HeadContent`, `Outlet`, and `Scripts`. It also shows how `createServerFn` can provide data to a route loader.

It gives an application flow for server-backed route data: keep databases, files, secrets, and persistence behind `createServerFn`, then call the function from the loader instead of fetching a relative API URL during SSR. The skill also points to separate skills for server functions, middleware, authentication, server routes, and deployment.

The main setup constraint is concrete: `tanstackStart()` must come before the React plugin in `vite.config.ts`, or route generation and server-function compilation fail. The setup uses `@tanstack/react-start`, `@tanstack/react-router`, `react`, `react-dom`, Vite, the React plugin, and TypeScript.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add TanStack/router --skill start-core -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/start-core/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/start-core/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add TanStack/router --skill start-core -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/start-core/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add TanStack/router --skill start-core -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/start-core/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install TanStack/router start-core
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/start-core/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add TanStack/router --skill start-core -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/TanStack/router --path packages/start-client-core/skills/start-core
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/start-core/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add TanStack/router --skill start-core -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/TanStack/router/tree/HEAD/packages/start-client-core/skills/start-core/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- configure Vite for a TanStack Start app
- create a router factory around `routeTree.gen.ts`
- build the root document shell with `HeadContent`, `Outlet`, and `Scripts`
- move server-only work into `createServerFn`
- choose the next skill for auth, middleware, or REST routes

## Example prompts
- Set up the TanStack Start foundation with `tanstackStart()` and the React plugin.
- Review `src/router.tsx` and `src/routes/__root.tsx` for structural issues in the router and document shell.
- Add a `createServerFn` data loader to `src/routes/index.tsx` and explain where that code runs.

# TanStack Start Core

TanStack Start is a full-stack React framework built on TanStack Router and Vite. It adds SSR, streaming, server functions (type-safe RPCs), middleware, server routes, and universal deployment.

> **CRITICAL**: All code in TanStack Start is ISOMORPHIC by default — it runs in BOTH server and client environments. Loaders run on both server AND client. To run code exclusively on the server, use `createServerFn`. This is the #1 AI agent mistake.
> **CRITICAL**: TanStack Start is NOT Next.js. Do not generate `getServerSideProps`, `"use server"` directives, `app/layout.tsx`, or any Next.js/Remix patterns. Use `createServerFn` for server-only code.
> **CRITICAL**: Types are FULLY INFERRED. Never cast, never annotate inferred values.

Use this entry skill to pick one primary workflow. Do not load every Start sub-skill. Add another only when the implementation crosses that boundary; for example, a protected mutation needs `server-functions` plus `auth-server-primitives`, while a public REST endpoint needs `server-routes` alone.
