## What it does

The skill walks an agent through still-image generation in SpriteCook. It covers which model fits a task, how to set dimensions, and how to keep a set visually consistent with reference assets. Credits, manifests and safe downloads live in `spritecook-workflow-essentials`, so the two are used together.

For new pixel-art sprites it suggests starting with `generate_game_art` using `model="gemini-nano-banana-2.1"`, `pixel=true` and `resolution="1K"`. Transparency goes through `background="transparent"` — SpriteCook strips the background after generation, since NB2.1 has no native alpha. When a sprite has to come back at an exact small size, like a 32×32 item icon, switch to `model="pixel-engine-image-v1"`: it draws the exact `width` × `height` and returns the background already removed, but it rejects any reference image, so a request carrying `style_asset_ids` or `edit_asset_id` fails. Put the shared look in `theme` and `style` instead, and reuse the same wording for every sprite in the set.

Several related props are cheaper as one 3×3 or 4×4 grid: a single generation returns the whole batch and keeps the collection even. Set the pixel dimensions per piece, not for the sheet. None of this runs without a connected SpriteCook MCP server — if it is disconnected, the agent should say so and leave software installs and auth settings alone. A full UI screen belongs to `spritecook-build-ui-kits`; `mode="ui"` is for one isolated icon, button or frame.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add SpriteCook/skills --skill spritecook-generate-sprites -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/spritecook-generate-sprites/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/spritecook-generate-sprites/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add SpriteCook/skills --skill spritecook-generate-sprites -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/spritecook-generate-sprites/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add SpriteCook/skills --skill spritecook-generate-sprites -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/spritecook-generate-sprites/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install SpriteCook/skills spritecook-generate-sprites
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/spritecook-generate-sprites/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add SpriteCook/skills --skill spritecook-generate-sprites -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/SpriteCook/skills --path skills/spritecook-generate-sprites
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/spritecook-generate-sprites/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add SpriteCook/skills --skill spritecook-generate-sprites -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/SpriteCook/skills/tree/HEAD/skills/spritecook-generate-sprites/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- generate a pixel-art character sprite in a consistent style
- get a 32×32 item icon with a transparent background
- produce a set of props in one 3×3 grid generation
- pick the right model and resolution for an asset type
- keep palette and perspective aligned across a sprite series

## Example prompts
- Generate a pixel-art treasure chest sprite, transparent background, 32×32
- Make a 3×3 grid of nine tavern props in one style
- I need a potion icon at exactly 16×16 with pixel-engine-image-v1

# SpriteCook Generate Sprites

Use this skill for still-image generation. Pair it with `spritecook-workflow-essentials` for credits, manifests, safe downloads, and shared defaults.

**Requires:** A connected SpriteCook MCP server. If disconnected, explain that connection is needed and use the host's native connection flow when authorized. Do not install software or change authentication settings as part of an art task.

For a complete UI screen or cohesive UI system, stop and use `spritecook-build-ui-kits` instead. The UI-kit workflow creates one coherent concept before extracting reusable controls and states. Keep `generate_game_art(mode="ui")` for one isolated icon, badge, button, control, divider, frame, or decoration.

## Pixel-Art Model Default

- For new pixel-art sprites, use `generate_game_art` with `model="gemini-nano-banana-2.1"`, `pixel=true`, and `resolution="1K"` unless the user requests different settings. For a new base character, use `generate_character(model="gemini-nano-banana-2.1", ...)`.
- Keep explicit user choices and saved preset models. For edits, preserve the source model inherited by the tool unless the user requests a model change.
- Check `list_generation_models` for current availability and prices. Nano Banana 2.1 retains NB2's base 12 / 18 / 30 credits at 1K / 2K / 4K at release. Source resolution is separate from the requested pixel-art dimensions and does not guarantee an exact final canvas size.
- For transparent sprites, continue using `background="transparent"`; SpriteCook removes the background after generation. NB2.1 does not produce native alpha transparency.
